Rosemary Merrell Obituary

Rosemary Rice Merrell, 87, of Stamford, CT died on August 14, 2012, at home. She was the wife of the late John B. Merrell. She is survived by her daughter Marcie Merrell Schonborn and husband Alan Schonborn of Dallas, Texas, her son John R. Merrell and wife Shari Merrell of Shelton, Connecticut; her 3 grandchildren, Joshua Schonborn, Maggie and Alexandra Merrell; and her brother Rogers Rice of Brewster, MA. Born on May 3, 1925, in Montclair, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Laura Rogers Rice. Best known for her performance as daughter "Katrin" (as well as narra-tor) on CBS-TV's award winning "I Remember Mama" series, which ran for 9 years, 1949-1956. Rosemary Rice's career began while she was attending junior high school in Montclair, New Jersey. That's where she was discovered to perform in the first of twelve Broadway shows. Among her most notable appearances were in "Junior Miss" and "Dear Ruth", as well as "I Remember Mama". Rosemary was also known for her portrayal of Betty on the Archie Andrews radio program. She has also appeared on Playhouse 90, Studio One, Let's Pretend, Calvacade of America, My True Story, CBS Mystery Theater, When A Girl Marries, Young Doctor Malone, and the NBC Playhouse. Rosemary was a well established figure in the world of children's entertainment, having written, narrated and sung 9 albums for Columbia Records, where she won a "Grammy Award". She has also recorded 6 albums for RCA. Rosemary has recorded nine books for The American Girl Collection, and was the voice of Caedmon Records (books on tape). Rosemary's work with children has not been confined only to her albums. She has also recorded 20 text books for the Allyn and Bacon Publishing company in Boston, MA. With her warm voice and pleasing quality, Rosemary was without a doubt one of the finest and foremost children's artists of our time. Although she is best known for her nine years as Katrin on CBS-TV's "I Remember Mama", she also appeared in the "Edge of Night", "Search for Tomorrow", "One Life to Live", "Kraft Television Theatre", "As the World Turns", "AM Today", "The Mike Douglas Show", "The Today Show", "Dave Garroway Show", and other television shows. Rosemary appeared on and off camera in dozens of radio and television commercials. Most notably for the voice of Clairol "If I've only one life to live, let me live it as a blonde!", Johnson & Johnson products, and was the Voice for New York City's World Fair Exhibition for Bell Tele-phone. During her career, Rosemary was the recipient of three CLIO Awards, The Grammy Award, The Pulitzer Prize, three Peabody Awards, and an Emmy Award. A Memorial Service will be held at the Congregational Church of New Canaan, 23 Park Street, New Canaan, CT on September 8, 2012 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Paley Center for Media, 25 West 52nd Street, NY, NY 10019. I was so fortunate to be asked to work with Rosemary to redecorate some items in her home. She was elegant and had impeccable taste. We became friends and she introduced me to her friend Jane Adkins, who became a client and friend as well. I still miss these lovely women.

I can hardly believe that a year has passed since she has left us, it's so lonely down here without her. But we match on and do as Dad said "stay the right path and keep your head held high" and someday we will laugh. I miss you both so much, Marcie

My children and I used to sing along with the Hey Kids Let's sing songs. In fact, we knew most of them by heart and even sang them together while in the car. She was super!

Rosemary's service was beautiful, like her. The pink roses on the altar and at the reception on the tables were lovely like her (donated to Stamford Hospital) Since I only knew Rosie for the past 4 years, it meant so much to hear of her life from her dearest friends. I especially appreciated Marcie sharing Rosie's last day with us so we know it was a GOOD day!

I was one of the children with Rosemary who was on the record "Hey Kids Lets Sing". I was a 4th grader at Mount Hebron elementary school in Montclair. I remember her as a very kind and professional women who thought she could take some kids from her old school and make a record....and she did! It was an exciting time for my school friends and for me. We were all treated like family. The album cover is framed and hangs on my wall at home. My sincere condolences to her family and friends.

I knew Rosemary Merrell only the past three years when I was honored to work with her to redecorate some of her very beautiful Edgehill home. She was lovely and had exquisite and definite taste. I admired her dignity and forward thinking attitude. It was a priviledge to know Rosemary and I will miss her. This photo is of her and one her many friends at Edgehill in July 2011.

Rosemary was a longstanding patient of mine, starting in NY. I first treated her > 10 years ago. Thereafter she adopted my kids as if a family member and fairy godmother. She became a family friend- we later joined her and Jack at her old time radio performances, and, when we left NY, kept in touch by phone. Without fail, on every holiday, she sent boxes of humorous gifts to my kids.
We know that she had to have shared her giant heart with so many others in similar ways. A great loss, a life lived large.

I read the beautiful tribute to Ms. Merrell in The Kansas City Star and I offer my sympathy to the family. I want to take this opportunity to say how very much I enjoyed everything in which she performed; especially the " I remember Mama" series, and the movie "Junior Miss". That movie, an all time favorite, still has warm memories. I remember sitting at the Saturday movies and think how pretty she was and what beautiful eyes. And she and her sister fought the same as my sister and me! Oh, how I wish "Junior Miss" would be shown on television.
Again, many thanks for sharing your wonderful memories with the public.
Warmest regards, Barbara Layman Smith, Shawnee, Kansas

As a student in rural California, I vividly remember Mrs. Merrell's account of her role in "I Remember Mama" in one of our English literature books. The photo essay depicted her daily work as an actress and her off-screen life in New Jersey. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies on the passing of this gifted television pioneer.

Rosie and Jack Merrill were very dear and devoted friends of my parents Roseanne and the late Eugene A. Diserio. I had the priviledge to get to know them both well through the years. What was most memorable is a night they performed their "slapstick off color" banter at our annual Dunning Road Christmas Party where they had lived for many years prior to our generation....we always invited the old timers back. Rosie was a pistol ;) and a very talented and generous human being. RIP after a life well lived. With love to your family, Eugenie Diserio

It is sad to see a dedicated performer and a friend to all the fans of OTRadio leave us. An age is passing, and I think those of us who had a chance to see her perform in radio recreations will feel her passing even more than those in the hobby who never attended RCLive or the other conventions she attended.

Dear Merrell Family,
We did not know Jack and Rosie very well at Woodway and unfortunately Jack died before we moved to Edgehill a year ago. But Rosie held our first Edgehill cocktail party and dinner, gathering some folks she thought we should know and assembling us in the private dining room for a stimulating and fun evening. Our friendship grew and we were scheduled to have dinner with her the night after she died. She was couragous in her fight, against all odds, to get back on her feet again. We look forward to being welcomed to paradise by Rosie. May she rest in peace.
