The last twenty years Jim was a technical leader of Token Ring LANs, eventually focusing on IEEE standards. He was chair of the IEEE 802 LAN Committee for five years, and President of the IEEE Standards Association, serving on the IEEE Board of Directors. He was a TI Fellow and is a IEEE Life Fellow. Jim is survived by his wife, Muffy, two sons, John of Dallas and Daniel of Garland, and a brother, Donald in Hamilton, NJ. Daniel's wife and grand-daughter Eve are part of his family. Brock and Joyce Barton

We found out only yesterday that Jim had passed. We went on some camping trips with him. Brock will always remember one campsite, with Jim marveling how the skunk that was outside the tent, ransacking their packpacks, had a beautiful tail. The skunk ate all their crackers and rustled plastic bags for 30 minutes, keeping everybody awake. We will miss Jim. Our deepest sympathy to the family.

Condolences to Jim's family. I knew him from various standards committees and thought very highly of him. He did his job exceptionally well, and was very modest and cordial to all he worked with in IEEE 802 and T1E1.4 standards.

Dear Mrs. Carlo:

You probably don't remember me. My name is Peter Osterberg and I worked for Jim as an MIT grad student at TI in the late 70's. Jim was a great man. I learned a lot from him. He was also a great friend and I have fond memories of our time together. He will be missed. My deepest sympathies to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Peter Osterberg

Heaven truly gained a brillant and kind man this past week with the arrival of Jimmy. He made his parents proud and was equally as proud of his own sons and their loved ones. Our love to Muffy, Donald and family.

My memories of Jim and the Carlos date back to 1960, when our two families took many trips together (Our fathers were life long friends). Muffy, our deepest sympathy and prayers for you and the entire family. Jim had a huge impact on so many, so he can rest now knowing his memory will live on for decades to come.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Muffy, I extend my heartfelt condolences to you. Jim is safe with the Lord, and now I ask for Our Loving Father to bring you serenity in knowing you performed a superb job in taking care of him. The most difficult feeling is not seeming to be able to help one's beloved, but he knew you loved him. God bless you and I hope to see you at future carcinoid gatherings.
