Raymond Tolson Obituary

Tolson III, Raymond Stanley Raymond Stanley Tolson III is at peace with his Lord Jesus Christ, his Savior. Born September 20th, 1947 in South Bend, Indiana while his dad was finishing his education at the University of Notre Dame. At the age of six months, he returned to his family's home in Brownsville, Texas and spent his formative years growing up in the Rio Grande Valley. After a move to San Antonio, he graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1965. He then entered The University of Texas, where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry & Biology, Ray moved to Dallas and received his MBA from Southern Methodist University. Soon after, he worked for Moran & Hoffman in Real Estate and later for Hudson & Hudson. In 1980, Ray decided to start his own Real Estate Development Company. During the late 80's, he started the first Grandys' franchises, owning several around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. In the early 90's , his love for the Gulf Coast inspired him and his father to open the Gulf Coast Oyster Bar on South Padre Island, which quickly became a local favorite. Ray was a member of the Dallas Safari Club for over 35 years. An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Ray traveled to numerous countries in search of big game, but his love for South Texas kept him close to home and his endless search for trophy whitetail deer was his true passion. He was also a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. Ray is survived by his wife of 33 years, Deborah Hamilton Tolson, along with his 3 children, Ray Stanley Tolson IV (Cuatro), William Hamilton Tolson (Billy) and Deborah "Christine" Tolson. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. JoAnn Skinner Tolson of San Antonio and preceded in death by the late Raymond Stanley Tolson Jr.; his sisters Jan Erin Tolson of San Antonio; Mary Vance Jones and husband James Landon Jones Jr. of McAllen; Erin Elizabeth Eckensberger and husband James Henry Eckensberger Jr. of Boerne. Nieces and Nephews include: Garrett Cox, Tierney Tolson Oakes, Erin Ann Tolson Oakes, Casteel Jones, Mary Landon Jones, Tres Jones, Lindsey Eckensberger, Jamie Eckensberger, and Mary Grace Eckensberger. His Father-in-law William Norman Hamilton and Brother-in-law William Roderick Hamilton. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the United States Golf Association. Ray had a sincere love for the game and the USGA's largest philanthropic investment is through its For the Good of the Game Grants Program, through which in excess of $65 million has been distributed to more than 1,000 organizations that have served millions of young people and individuals with disabilities through golf. A Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, December 6th at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m., Monday, December 7, 2009 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will follow services at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

I met Ray in 1984 and just learned he passed. I was with Whataburger when I met Ray and he and I did my first real estate deal in the DFW area. He was a good and honest man.

To the Tolson Family - - I am saddened to hear that we have lost 'one of the good guys.' Our loss on this Earth is a tremendous gain for the Heavens above. I was Real Estate Manager for Grandy's back in the early days (and then rejoined them in the late 80s). I knew Ray from 'way back then' and always enjoyed running into him at real estate functions. He was always smiling and he made others smile.

May God wrap his arms around all of you especially tightly at this time.

I'll miss Ray and our good times on the golf course and on the practice tee pursuing a better game for ourselves. Most of all I'll miss his insightful wisdom and observations which always gave me a new subject to ponder. May he rest in peace until we are called home and reunited.

Debbie, Don and I have been in California for ten days and just learned that Ray had passed away. We are so deeply saddened and sorry that we weren't in Dallas for the service. From the day I met you two years and years ago (probably before you were married), I always thought you were the perfect couple. Don always enjoyed visiting with Ray about real estate deals and remembers that Ray always flashed a big smile whenever they saw each other. Don was very fond of him and shocked by this sad news. You and your children will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Charlotte and I were very moved by the beautiful service at Christ the King today. The house was packed for...you, and your family. Ray must have been calmed by this show of support and love. We will miss him too. Love, Charlotte & Dan

I always looked forward to playing golf with Ray on those Saturday mornings. He was capable of playing quite well, but like the rest of us, regressed to the mean at some point. You could always count on him to say, at the end of the round, "thanks for letting me play with you" as if we were doing him a big favor. He always spoke so fondly of Debbie and the children, and he was clearly proud of his children's accomplishments. I will miss him tremendously.

My dear Tolsons,
Was so sad to read about Ray Stanley... even though it's been years, I'll always consider him one of my best childhood friends; we shared so many great times all the way through high school. He was such a doll, so much fun, such a great dancer; always in the middle of "what's going on". The wonderful times spent in your home will always be among my fondest.

My love and heart go out to all of you, I am so sorry.

Always,
Dee Ann

To Debbie and family, I am so sorry to learn of Ray's death. We both used that post office by Il Sorrento so I saw him regularly and we often took time to stop and talk (laugh) about something. I met him about the time that he and David Dunning had the fireworks stand. I remember bringing a Christmas wreath to you all on your first married Christmas, as a (late) wedding gift. Ray was the best. All my sympathy.
