Donald Marshman Obituary

Marshman, Donald McGill
Donald McGill Marshman Jr., a 60-year resident of Darien, died early Thursday morning at Stamford Hospital. He was 92.
Mr. Marshman was born in Cleveland on December 21, 1922 to Donald M. and Maud Louise (McMurray) Marshman. He was educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.; Western Reserve Academy, Hudson, Ohio, and graduated from Yale College in the Class of 1945.
In a long career as a professional writer Mr. Marshman was an assistant editor at both Life and Time magazines, and then a screenwriter at Paramount, RKO, and 20th Century-Fox. Morgan and Philip Morris.
Along with Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder, Mr. Marshman received an Academy Award for the Original Story and Screenplay of the film "Sunset Boulevard" (1950).
In Darien he was a member of the Republican Town Committee for five years and served for two terms in the Representative Town Meeting. In 1982 he was the Republican nominee for State Senator from Darien-Stamford, but lost to the incumbent, Thom Serrani. He also served as president of the Darien Library and contributed editorials to the local papers on a regular basis.
He is survived by his four children: David and his wife Sue of Venice, FL; John and his wife Ann of Westport; Frances of Somerville, MA; and George and his wife Sidney of Darien. Also by five grandchildren: Victoria, Elizabeth and Natalie Marshman of Westport, and James and Alexander Marshman of Darien.
