He was a regular patron of St. Jude Children's Hospital. He was a devout St. Gabriel's parishioner. A good night's sleep in Matt's home typically followed a Reds or Bengals victory. A perfect night's sleep followed any Xavier basketball win, especially one deep into the NCAA basketball tournament. Matt was one of Xavier's most passionate fans. He and his family could always be found in their court-side seats at home games and they also enjoyed traveling to numerous post-season road games. The entire family is also huge Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans and love every victory, especially the home opening game vs. Rice, which they attended this past Labor Day weekend. In 2005, when Notre Dame beat Michigan, they even watched the game in the delivery room minutes before Caroline was born. Matt was a staunch conservative Republican and a tireless patriot. He loved everything the US Navy Seals represent and what they do to protect our country. Matt expects all of us to vote for his close friend, Hamilton County Commissioner Chris Monzel. He also fully expects votes for Ohio Governor John Kasich, and for anyone opposing Hillary Clinton in 2016.

I met Matt prior to his CH Dean days and saw him grow, mature and become very successful in our business. He was the epitome of what our world needs. Well respected, honest and hard working; a credit to his family and his community. My heart aches for Dick and Diane as well as his wife and children.

As the brother of my best friend throughout my childhood, Matt McCormick was our "moral and spiritual leader" in all of our neighborhood conquests. Often times, we could hear him snickering after a ruse that he put us up to only to then take the moral high ground to chastise us when Mr. McCormick emerged from the house to let us know that our high jinks were not well received during his business call. I always wondered if Mr. and Mrs. McCormick were aware of the "brainchild" or inspiration for much of our behavior as kids. At the time of the incidents, it did not seem wise to ask Mr. McCormick :-) I loved hanging out with Matt during overnights at the McCormick household which included great food, David Letterman, and ridiculous comedies like the Adventures of Ford Fairlane. I can still hear Matt and Brian laughing hysterically repeating lines from the Andrew Dice Clay movie (“My Hair, My Hair” still echos in my head). God I enjoyed those days as the McCormicks don't just make friends….they invite you into their family.
Matt's infectious personality just drew me as a kid, and I truly struggle now as I write this remembrance and realize that the world no longer has Matt in it. There are just so few people in life that when you think of them, you smile. Matt's masterful handling of the heartbreaking passing of his brother and my old friend Brian in 2008 was truly inspirational. In his eulogy, he was able to turn crisis into comedy without forgetting the gravity of the moment. In my shock at a childhood friend's tragic and sudden passing, Matt somehow made all of us feel a little better and helped us cope a little easier. Matt certainly had a gift to sense in people what they most needed, and in 2008, he delivered.
I will always remember Matt for his "leadership" at Lil Sibs weekend at Xavier and our 90 mile an hour trips to Xavier singing songs to the Animal House soundtrack. I shall truly miss our former mentor. I can only imagine the pranks in Heaven with Brian and Matt now working in tandem. I don't know that I can yet understand the loss, but I do know that even in a business suit he was still the guy I knew growing up. My absolute heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. and Mrs. McCormick and especially to Susan, Caroline, and Patrick. The Hagans are always here if you should need them.

With Love and friendship,

Matt Hagan
