News Death Notice

HARSHBARGER, Richard "Dick" L. 78, of Medway, Ohio passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 at Hospice of Dayton surrounded by his family. He was born August 27, 1933 in Mt Vernon, Illinois the son of the late Lionel & Vivian (Cooper) Harshbarger. In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Gene Harshbarger; sister, Pat Leffler; grandson, Michael Harshbarger. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara; daughter, Debra (Roger) Downing; son, Stephen Harshbarger; granddaughter, Amy Harshbarger; grandson, Roger Downing III; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Dick graduated from Mt. Vernon High School, the class of 1951. He served 12 years in the Armed Forces, 3 years in the Navy, aboard the U.S.S. Greenwich Bay, which included three deployments to the Persian Gulf and the Middle East. He served 9 years in the U.S. Air Force. During that time he played fast pitched softball. He was selected four consecutive years to play for the Air Force Logistics Command team in the worldwide Air Force Tournament. Dick continued his career in civil service at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He retired from WPAFB as Deputy Director of Computer Operations for Headquarters AFLC. Dick was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Carlisle. He served 3 terms on the Pastoral Council and was Chairman for one term. Dick was a senior server at the daily morning masses and also served as an acolyte. He was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 6144, New Carlisle and fourth degree Sir Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 822, Springfield, Ohio. Dick was a life member and past commander of the American Legion Post 286, New Carlisle. He was chairman for both building additions to Post 286. He also served as Assistant Sergeant of Arms for four district commanders. Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Thursday, September 1, 2011 at the TROSTEL, CHAPMAN, DUNBAR & FRALEY FUNERAL HOME, New Carlisle, Ohio. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 AM Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Carlisle, Ohio. Burial will be in Medway Cemetery.
