Reverend Rowan A. GREER

Rowan GREER Obituary

News Death Notice

GREER, Reverend Rowan A. The Reverend Rowan A. Greer ended his earthly existence on March 17, 2014, leaving behind a long trail of friends and memories. He taught for many years at Yale Divinity School and will continue to live in the minds of the students he encountered. He was a scholar of Early Church History and Early Christian Leaders, a life - long student of classic languages and literature, and an author of many books and articles in his field. He was a craftsman of well-wrought and stimulating sermons and a patient and inspirational professor. After his graduation from Yale College and from General Seminary he started his career in parish work in an Episcopal Church in Fairfield, CT followed by several years of teaching in Edinburgh, Scotland and his long sojourn at Yale Divinity School. Following his retirement he did parish work at the downtown Episcopal Church in Charlotte, NC before returning to New Haven in 1999 where he continued to write and remain involved in parish work. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his younger sister Betsy Dynes of Albuquerque, NM (by way of Boulder, CO, Stamford, CT, Chicago, IL and Dayton, OH). At some unknown point he will be succeeded in death by his loving and admiring brother David and sister-in-law Dulie who enjoyed many decades of summer reunions with him devoted to Shakespeare, laughter and wide-ranging conversation. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews (Thomas C. Greer, James H. Greer, Katherine A. Mackintosh, all of Dayton, OH, William R. Dynes of Indianapolis, IN and Elizabeth D. Krauss of Albuquerque, NM) and his brother-in-law John Dynes of Lawton, CO. He is also survived by his canine companion Mackintosh and by his devoted friend Kathy Queen who for many years shared his love of dogs and who gave him unselfish and unlimited support during his arduous last illness. There will be no formal viewing or service. In his professional life Rowan attended more than enough funerals. In lieu of flowers or donations, give yourself in memory of Rowan a stimulating book. If you would like to share an anecdote, mail or email it to David C. Greer, 400 PNC Center, 6 North Main St., Dayton, OH 45402 ([email protected]) and he will share it with family and others. Friends and acquaintances are invited to a gathering of memories at Christ Church, 84 Broadway, New Haven on March 28 from 5:00 to 7:30pm.

Still miss Rowan and think often of his example when I walk into a classroom to teach.

Professor Rowan's ideas are burned into my brain and continue to inspire me 40 years after I took a class from him at Yale. His spirit and thoughts live on!

Dr. Greer was a great writer, scholar,
and professor at Yale. I was fortunate
to have had three courses with him. His
great intellect just shined as he lectured. His courses were filled with
both laughter and deep theological
thought. I was very fortunate to have
had such a great teacher, who became a
life-long friend. Yale is not quite
the same place since his passing. The Rev. Ron Hooker, Retired Professor
and Pastor Emeritus & President of the
Columbus Metropolitan Church Council.

Terribly saddened to hear Rowan's name mentioned this morning at Trinity Episcopal here in Collinsville, CT where I've been a member since 1990. Have many fond memories of Rowan's years at St. Peter's Church,Cheshire, my home parish. A charming, kind, soft-spoken and extremely intelligent man with a sly, puckish sort of wit that caught you often unawares. Deepest sympathies to his family members and close friends. Rest in peace, dear Rowan.
