John Drozd Obituary

John F. Drozd, Sr.

AGE: 72 • Colorado Springs, CO,

formerly of Wilmington

On September 11, 2016, after a brief illness, John F. Drozd, Sr. of Colorado Springs, CO (formerly of Wilmington) went to his eternal reward.

John was born in Wilmington on June 30, 1944 and raised as a "southsider". He graduated from Salesianum and went on to proudly serve his country in the U. S. Air Force during the Vietnam era; and later, as a reservist for many years. He earned his Bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Delaware and his MBA from Southern Illinois University.

John's career was with the DuPont Company in Wilmington as an accountant and expeditor. He was a Certified Fraud Examiner.

John's hobbies included bowling, photography, stamp collecting and trivia, especially little known history facts. He was a true Phillies and Eagles enthusiast all his life. He was an avid runner and a proud member of the Pike Creek Valley Running Club, serving as its Treasurer for many years and receiving several awards for his achievements and dedication. He completed numerous 5Ks, half and full marathons and 3 triathlons. He was extremely proud of his personal accomplishments.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary (Poczynek) Drozd. He is survived by his son, John Jr. (Sheila) of Colorado Springs and his daughter, Mary Jennifer Sheppard (David) of Wilmington; and, 5 grandchildren, Abi, Tori Jack, RJ and Logan. Also surviving are brothers Edward (Juanita) and Joseph (Paula) as well as nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

On Saturday, Nov. 5th, at 10:30 a.m., the family will greet visitors at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Rd., Wilm., 19808. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity in John's name.

Deepest sympathy to the family on John's passing. Met John back in the 70s while attending classes at UD Wilcastle Center. Turned out we had a lot in common and stayed friends for quite some time. My fondest memory was after completing a 5K at the JCC, John scolding me for trying to pass him near the finish on the uphill. He told me that he wasn't going to allow anyone to pass him, no matter. He simply picked up his pace to stay ahead. What drive he had!

John and I ran in the same age group. He was fiercely competitive but always a gentleman. Like most of us he was not a natural athlete, but accomplished a great deal with courage, hard work and pure force of will. He was an inspiration.

My condolences to his family for their loss.
