Harry Arthur Straw

Harry Arthur Straw, 89 of Hockessin died at Cokesbury Village on Saturday October 26, 2013.

He was born in Manchester, Connecticut, the son of Harry Cone Straw and Marjorie Dunn Straw. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1942 as class Valedictorian. He attended Yale University on an academic scholarship, graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry in the class of 1945. After serving in the US Army at the end of and following World War II, he returned to Yale, earning his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1950. Harry worked for the DuPont Company from 1950 until he retired in 1985.

He married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Kimball. Their marriage lasted 62 years, until Shirley's death in 2008.

Harry was active for decades in his churches, first at Westminster Presbyterian and then at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church after he and Shirley moved into Cokesbury Village in 1994. Following his retirement from DuPont, he and Shirley attended the Academy for Life Long Learning for many years taking courses in wide and varied subjects and where Harry taught classes in Mathematics. Harry also enjoyed reading (fiction and non-fiction), playing bridge, lively discussions, travel, vacations at the beach, playing the organ (which he built with his own hands), and lawn bowling.

Harry is survived by son, Charles A. Straw and his wife Susan of Oak Hill, VA; son Kimball Straw and his wife Judith of Pittsford, NY; grandchildren, Evan Straw, Katie Straw, Carrie DiPasquale, and Lindsay Galloway (Jesse) and great granddaughters, Paige DiPasquale and Grace Galloway.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday November 2, 2013 at the Cokesbury Village Auditorium. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Cokesbury Village Memorial Fund, 726 Loveville Road, Hockessin, DE 19707.
