Harold Houser Obituary

Harold G. "Dutch" Houser

Harold G. "Dutch" Houser, 85, of Claymont, passed away on March 6, 2013.

Mr. Houser was a graduate of Tamaqua High School in Tamaqua, PA. He earned his bachelors in science from East Stroudsburg University and his masters degree from West Chester University. Dutch was a teacher for 34 years for the State of Delaware/Brandywine School District/Mt. Pleasant High School, retiring in 1989. He was a longtime football coach. Dutch also coached various other sports during his career, including baseball, basketball and wrestling. Upon retirement, he spent time hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed being an instructor for Delaware Hunter Safety. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Mr. Houser was a Navy veteran of World War II. He grew up during the Depression, went into the Navy right after high school, and this helped to shape him as to who he was his entire lifetime.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years: Margaret Ann; his four sons: Eric (Denise), Keith, Carl and Mark; his four sisters: Ruby, Rita, Ruth and Gladys; and four grandchildren: Heather, Cati, Cody and Kyle.

A committal service will be 11 am Wednesday, March 13, at the Chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to American Diabetes Association, 100 W. 10th Street, Suite 1002, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Dutch was one the really great guys that I was blessed to know as a teacher and coach at Mount Pleasant. Mount Pleasant was a special place in the 80s when I was there and it was that way because of men like Dutch. God Bless his family in this time of loss. David Needs

I never had the honor of meeting Mr Houser but I call his son Mark my best friend. I am sure all of the traits that i admire in Mark were given to him by his father. I hope he his hanging with my father in heaven and they can have a cold one and tell war stories about Mark and I. My deepest sympathies to the entire family.

Great teacher and coach who always treated me better than I deserved. His family will probably feel a little cold now - this guy was warmer than the sun.

Fond memories of you and your loving wife welcoming us to the neighborhood some 20+ years ago will always be with us. Especially the delicious "surprises" you often left on our doorstep from your garden. You will surely be missed. May your family have comfort at this time, knowing that you are now at peace.
Fondly,

I will always remember Mr. Houser. He had a profound influence so many students and athletes. Mr. Houser was tough but tender. Although I haven't seen him in probably forty years, I have fond memories.....he was one of the great men in my life.

Condolences to the entire family. Dutch was one of that great group of men who taught, coached, and guided us Mt. Pleasant boys of the late 50's. I had him for gym and as a basketball coach. Thanks, Dutch, for your caring and the values you imparted.
