E. Newbold Smith

E. Newbold Smith on Jan. 18, 2013 of Bryn Mawr formerly of Villanova.

He grew up in Philadelphia and attended the Episcopal Academy ('44) where he excelled in football, wrestling and track earning him an induction to their inaugural athletic hall of fame class in 2000. Athletic success continued at The Naval Academy, where he won 10 varsity letters and was named first team All American in football in 1946 and won the Eastern Intercollegiate Heavyweight Wrestling championship in 1948.

In his adult life he was an accomplished equestrian until a horse accident left him partially paralyzed. From there he focused his energy on sailing, skippering and winning many ocean and day races. He also took his 43 foot sloop Reindeer on many expeditions, extensively exploring the west coast of Greenland. In 1976 he circumnavigate Spitsbergen, the most northern hebetated island, entering the Arctic circle becoming the furthest north of any pleasure craft. He authored a book Down Denmark Straights describing that trip as well as another book American Naval Broadsides a history of the early American Navy.

After a brief stint as an engineer with the DuPont Company, his professional career was in the security analysis and investment management business where he worked for Laird & Co., Laird, Bissell, & Meeds and Drexel Firestone before starting his own firm E.N. Smith & Co.

He served as a trustee at the Church Farm School, Philadelphia Maritime Museum, Mystic Seaport, and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

He was a member of the Cruising Club of America, the Corinthian Yacht club of Philadelphia, the New York Yacht Club, the Northeast harbor Fleet, the Wilmington Club, Gulph Mills Golf Club, Merion Cricket Club, the Wilmington Club, St. Anthony Club, and the Society of Colonial Wars.

Husband of the late Margaret "Peggy" (nee du Pont)

Father of the late Lewis and brother of the late William Smith Jr., Louise Walther and Margaret Dorrance.

Survived by his sons Stockton N. (Priscilla), Henry B. (June), his daughter Eleuthera "Ellie" (Temple) Grassi and his daughter-in-law Andrea Smith, and 13 loving grandchildren.

Graveside Service Private at the du Pont Family Cem.
