Virginia Schanche Obituary

Virginia M. Schanche

AGE: 90 • Wilmington, DE

Virginia Nadine Miller Schanche passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at the age of 90.

She was born in 1924 to Hazel, a school teacher, and Wilbur Miller, a farmer, in Gresham, Nebraska. Together with her older sister Lucille and younger sister Helen she was raised on the family farm and was graduated from McCool Junction High School.

With Lucille she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she worked for the Department of Treasury and then the Social Security Administration. She worked primarily in claims investigations. She met Wayne Curtis Schanche, originally of Yankton, South Dakota, while at Social Security, and they were married in 1943. They lived in Kansas City, Missouri and Baltimore, and had three children - Gary, Greg and Susan. After they both retired from the Social Security Administration they moved to Winchester, Virginia. In 1989 they moved to Wilmington to be with Susan and her family. She had a deep love of reading, music, and family.

She was preceded in death in 2002 by Wayne, her husband of 59 years, and her son Greg in 2007. She is survived by her sister Lucille Splinter, of York, Nebraska, and Helen Stewart, of Menlo Park, California, her son Gary, and his wife Carol, of Atlanta, Georgia, and her daughter Susan Heiss, and her husband Ralph, of Wilmington, and her eight grandchildren, Kristin, Kimberly, Matthew, Shawn, Laura, Ryan, Tyler and Kyle, and one great-grandaughter, Evelyn.

Services will be held at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 1301 N. Broom St., Wilmington, on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 with a visitation from 12 until 2, followed by a funeral service at 2 PM. Interment will take place in York, Nebraska on September 27.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.

I remembered today how you would drive me home from school every day. You did it for years, and I barely talked to you. I was a pretty rotten grade-schooler, and I was transitioning into a slightly less-rotten high-schooler. Those years I really kept to myself, and I wish I hadn't. I'm sorry for not sitting down and talking to you more, back then.

When you were starting to slip away, we would visit you as a family every month or so. Even though it got harder and harder to keep up a conversation with you, I really, really wanted to try. I remember that every once in a while I'd see a spark of your vivacious personality, which I suppose I was really discovering for the first time. I think I was trying to make up for all those times where I actively avoided you as a kid. And even though it would be for only a moment, I was glad see that you would remember for a second.

Anyway, after I left for college, I always said that I would come back to visit you whenever I was back in town. I did a few times, and I even brought my college sweetheart to meet you. You asked us when we were getting married, and we laughed. It would have been wonderful for you to see us get married. I think you will, honestly. You're invited to the wedding, of course.

I miss you, Grandma. It's been almost two years, and I think I still have dreams that you are alive, and that I'm visiting you in your home. I still pray for you, too. I should make the effort to visit you and say these things, instead of just typing them out. You made the effort to drive me around every day, so I think I can do the same for you at least one time.

I love and miss you, Grandma.
