AGE: 85 • Bear
Joel Louise Ervin, 85, of Bear, DE passed away on Monday, August 8, 2016 at Genesis Healthcare in Hockessin, DE.
Born September 28, 1930 in Bradford, PA, Joel was the daughter of the late Bruce Carothers and Genevieve Nora (Gnagey) Mellinger. She had a passion for theater and was active in Franklin and Marshall College's Green Room in Lancaster, PA and with the Senior Troupe of the North Canton Ohio Playhouse. She was a graduate of Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA and completed her master's degree at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. She was a member of the Newark Senior Center as well as the Alpha Gamma Delta Women's Sorority which promotes academic excellence. Joel was dedicated to her career in education, working 30 years at Franklin and Marshall College in a variety of positions including the Government department, Office of the Dean and lastly, as Associate Director of Continuing Education. She will be greatly missed and cherished by those who knew and loved her.
Joel is survived by her daughter, Dale A. Ervin of Lewes, DE, son Dana S. Ervin and daughter-in-law, Stephanie A. Matzo of Petaluma, CA; grandchildren Brendan M. Gibbons of Columbus, OH, Lauren A. Finnegan of Hilliard, OH; son-in-law Ryan Finnegan and great- grandchildren Kendall and Rory Finnegan.

Dearest Dale, Lauren and Brendan, We are so sad to learn about your mom's (grandma's) passing. She was quite a lady and we enjoyed the times we got to spend with her. Our hearts go out to you and we are sending huge hugs to you all.

Dana and Dale, I was saddened to learn of your mom's passing. I have many fond and happy memories of the time we worked together in the Continuing Education office at Franklin & Marshall, specifically with the Et Cetera Program. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

We would both like to extend our sympathy to the family at this time.
I (Betty) enjoyed Joel's friendship and traveling with her on our many bus trips. I was happy to see Joel perform in 2 plays at the North Canton Playhouse. One of the plays, she was the "star" of the show.
I would like to extend my thoughts to Lauren and her family. I (Deb) worked with Lauren at Doctor's Hospital in Massillon.

Dear Dale, Dana and extended family, it was my pleasure to work with Joel at Franklin & Marshall College. Joel was a lovely, remarkable woman who shared her talents in so many ways. I'll always cherish that our paths crossed at F&M. Working with Joel, Russ, Kathy and myself was always fun and pleasant times.
