David Painter Obituary

1921-2015 David Lee Painter, 93 David Lee Painter, 93, of Haverford, Pa., died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on January 1, 2015. He was the devoted husband of Harriet R. Painter, who predeceased him in 1997. Born in 1921 to Herbert J. and Caroline Painter in Haverford, he graduated from The Haverford School in 1939 and earned a degree in civil engineering from Yale University in 1943. Immediately upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Army 43rd Engineer Construction Battalion. He served in the South Pacific, constructing airstrips in the Philippines and New Guinea. After the end of World War II, he was stationed in Japan. Most of his subsequent career was spent as an engineer designing and constructing concrete plants for the Warner Company in Philadelphia (now part of Waste Management Company). David was known for his kind disposition, his positive outlook on life, and his devotion to his family. When asked recently what life advice he would give his grandchildren, he advised not to worry too much as all problems can ultimately be resolved. David was an avid tennis and squash player who played regularly into his 80's at the Merion Cricket Club. From childhood on, he enjoyed annual summer vacations in Maine. He was a proud member of the Pa. Society of the Sons of the Revolution. He issurvived by his three children- Suzanne Welsh (Robert) of Swarthmore, John Painter (Gale) of West Chester, and Sally Saello (Michael) of West Chester. He is also survived by eight grandchildren- EmilyGottenborg, Liza Pingree, Mary Welsh, Joseph Welsh, Brad Painter, Jason Painter, David Humes, and Brittany Saello. He was predeceasedby grandson Gregory Humes. He was pleased to have welcomed great-grandson Wyatt Gottenborg this past year. I knew Mr. Painter in the early 1980's. Even went on vacation with the family to Maine for a week. He was always very kind to me and a true gentleman of his time. So sorry for your loss, Hill. Thoughts and prayers to the entire Painter family.
