Dale Daugherty Obituary

D. Hayes "Chip" Daugherty

TYASKIN-Dale Hayes "Chip" Daugherty, 62, of Tyaskin died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Salisbury. Born on Sept. 25, 1950, and raised in Delmar, Del., he was the son of the late Dr. E. Bloxom Daugherty Jr., who died in 1988, and Opal Hayes Daugherty of Ocean City.

Chip graduated from Delmar High School in 1968, where he was an honor student (National Honor Society) and all-around athlete, and played in the school band. In football, as a wide receiver and halfback, he set a Delaware high school record in 1967 for most passes caught in a season and played in the annual Delaware Blue-Gold high school All-star Game in 1968. He was a two-year letterman in wrestling and a three-year letterman in baseball, as a pitcher and outfielder. In his senior year at Delmar, he was selected for the All Henlopen Conference team in all three sports. He attended the University of Delaware and Concord College and played football in both schools as a defensive back.

Chip enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1971 and was honorably discharged in 1973 with the rank of corporal. He was stationed primarily at the Marine Corps Finance Center in Kansas City.

Chip was an avid golfer. He started playing as a youth at Green Hill Y&CC, played on their club teams, and was the youngest player to win the President's Cup championship at Green Hill at the age of 14, in 1965. Chip simply loved the game, was a good player and played whenever he could.

Chip moved from Delmar to Tyaskin in 1983. He loved living on the "Westside" in Wicomico County and was very active in the community. He loved his "nature preserve" at his home and enjoyed seeing the wildlife come to the feeders.

He loved people, and was loved by those who knew him. He had a great sense of humor, and had a way making those around him crack a smile. He was a steadfast member of Alcoholics Anonymous and actively participated at meetings all over the Eastern Shore. He rarely missed a meeting. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Ministry and served as a trustee of Tyaskin Methodist Church. He loved music and sang in the church choir and frequently sang solos and played the harmonica at Sunday services and special events. He lived for his church community, for his AA community and for golf.

He was owner and operator of Chip's Septic Care, serving homeowners and businesses in Maryland and Delaware.

Chip is survived by his mother; two brothers, E. Bloxom "Blox" Daugherty III and his wife, Bridgette, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Derek W Daugherty and his lifelong companion, Rose Saviano, of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a nephew, Tyler W. Daugherty of Richmond and two nieces, Colleen Daugherty Fink and her husband, Jeff, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and Carolyn Marie Daugherty of Richmond. He was predeceased by a brother, Drew Tyler Daugherty, who died in 2002.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, at 11 a.m. at Nanticoke United Methodist Church in Nanticoke with the Rev. David Herr officiating, followed by fellowship at the adjacent church Christian Center.

Interment will be held privately at the Daugherty's family plot at St. Stephen's cemetery in Delmar. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Westside United Ministries, 20485 Nanticoke Road, Nanticoke, MD 21840.

Arrangements are in the care of Messick Funeral Home on Nanticoke Road in Bivalve.

That song we were going to sing together this summer will be the 1st song we'll sing together in heaven. Thanks for being "you"--you've left a hole in many hearts until we all get to heaven. Godspeed.

Chip and I were very close friends for many years. I remember the first time I met him on a Christmas Day in 1970. What a nice present that was. He was like a big brother to me and his passing absolutely breaks my heart. I wish I had known he was ill so I could have spent more time with him. Rest in peace dear brother.

I enjoyed the many rounds of golf I played with Chip when I had the privilege of being his pastor. Somehow he convinced my wife to let be his partner in the winter golf league at Deer Run. Many great memories. Praying for his family as they mourn the loss of Chip!!

Chip was a great friend-quick to interject a good solid dose of common sense into any perceived "crisis". Nothing flustered him.
I enjoyed singing with him many times, but my favorite performance of Chip's was when he sang at my wedding. Chip was with me through the ups and downs of life, always reminding me that a drink won't make anything any better.("Don't drink and go to a meeting".)
He will most definitely be missed. Rest in peace, Chip. I look forward to seeing you on the other side.
