Joseph Hornstein Obituary

Passed away Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the age of 97. Joe was born to Abraham and Annie Hornstein on January 29, 1913 in New York City. Following high school he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving proudly until 1966, during which time he became a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After his retirement from the Corps, he had a second career as director of security for Supermarkets General Corporation, a major chain of supermarkets, hardware stores and department stores in the Northeast. After his second retirement, he continued to work until 1996 as a consultant on industrial security and was awarded with lifetime membership in the National Society for Industrial Security. During his second career and consulting work, he served as a member of the board of directors of the SGC Credit Union in New Jersey. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his eight siblings, and his wife of 68 years, Ethel Hornstein. He is survived by his children, Linda Oldfield of Rochester NY, Eugene Hornstein and wife Gerry of Galveston TX, grandchildren, William Hornstein and wife Kelly of Pflugerville TX, Susan Hornstein of Dallas TX, and by his great granddaughter, Rebecca Hornstein of Pflugerville TX. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Adele Horn of West Palm Beach FL and by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico VA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the charity of one's choice.
