George Angle Obituary

Angle, George Motley

Rochester: December 28, 2016 at home with his family at age 94. A lifelong resident of Rochester, George is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Alva Hood Angle "Vee". Also survived by his four children, George M. Angle, Jr. (Jenifer) of Tohatchi, NM, Timothy B. Angle (Melinda) of Los Angeles, Alva A. Scott "VeeVee" (Jon) of Wyomissing, PA., Nicholas V.V. Angle of Pennington, N.J. He was a loving father, grandfather of eleven and great-grandfather of four.

George Motley Angle was born in 1922, the last of five children to Ann and Wesley Angle. George attended local schools, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, before graduating from Philips Exeter Academy in 1940. George was matriculated at Harvard College for the class of 1944, but as for so many, he attended college in 3 years and 3 summers in order to serve in World War II. May 28th, 1943 was a seminal moment in George's life as he simultaneously turned 21, graduated from Harvard, and enlisted in the Navy. George attended Midshipman School at Notre Dame as a 'Ninety Day Wonder,' graduating first in a class of 2000. He was assigned to the USS Bearss Destroyer in the Pacific theater where he served and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (jg).

After the war, George took advantage of the GI Bill and attended Harvard Business School from 1946-1948. George's career included Marine Midland Bank, The Matey Corporation, and ultimately 26 years at The University of Rochester, retiring in 1989 as Vice President of Public Affairs.Throughout his career, George served on many local boards including the Urban League and The Harley School.

Upon retirement, George continued his commitment to community with three large projects. First and foremost, he was the impetus behind the rowing team at The U of R. This included the establishment of a dynamic rowing program and the creation and organization of the annual Rochester Regatta, an international event attracting many of the best teams in the sport. Secondly, George continued his commitment to education with his devotion to Rochester's Child, a program committed to preparing all preschoolers for Kindergarten. Finally, George was the founder and inspiration behind the senior men's educational group, Oasis, devoted to on-going and in-depth learning.

George loved to sail, ski, and row. He participated annually in the Head of the Charles Rowing Regatta until he was 83. George and Vee also loved their summer home in the Thousand Islands.

George will be remembered as a wonderful husband and father as well as a warm and loving grand and great grandparent. His life speaks for itself, and like many of his generation, bears witness to the ideals of family, determination, commitment, and lifelong learning. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, January 6th at 11 AM at Christ Episcopal Church, 36 S. Main St. Pittsford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to University of Rochester's Rowing Program, Office of Gift & Donor Records, 300 E. River Rd., P.O. Fun memories of the time I received a call from George one summer asking to meet with me in Kingston Ontario. He wanted to talk about a date for a regatta that would work for Ontario schools. I suggested the Canadian thanksgiving Sunday since the annual Brock Invitational was held on the Saturday. That allowed Ontario schools to travel to Rochester to race the next day. The annual Rochester regatta has become a staple in the calendar of schools across the eastern US and Canada. I enjoyed reconnecting with George and Vee for at least 10 possibly 15 years after that, meeting each year at the annual Rochester Regatta.

Back when the only rowing in Rochester was on Irondequoit Bay, John Bernfield and I kept 'running into' George, which still seems impossible! He was always good humored, helpful and understanding...with us then, and to many others throughout his life.

I believe is was in the summer of 1987 that I received a call from George. He was calling me in my capacity as Head Coach, Rowing at Queen's University in Kingston Ontario. At that time he and his wife Vee were holidaying at their cottage on the St. Lawrence River opposite Gananoque. When we subsequently met he wanted to explore the viability of developing a rowing regatta in Rochester and wanted my advice regarding a date that would entice Canadian universities to attend. At that time Brock University in St. Catharine's annually hosted a regatta on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. I suggested that George consider the Sunday following the Brock regatta since most crews were already close by. Well, little did I know that starting in 1988 I would miss thanksgiving dinner with my family for the next 20 years or so! I enjoyed renewing aquaintance with George and Vee each fall during those years and invariably we would reminisce about our fateful meeting years earlier.
George was a kind, considerate and generous and generous person.
On behalf of the Queen's rowing community I pass on condolences to George and family (which includes his extended rowing family in Rochester).
