I'm still reeling at the thought of Honeoye Falls and Mendon having to go on without Shirley Arena. She had her finger on the pulse of the community, and knew so much about the background of the place. I learned a lot about writing, life and hard work while at the Sentinel. I pray that the family feels the prayers we send their way and that Shirley's legacy lives on.

Dear Carl,Kim,Lisa,and family,
I am so sorry to hear that Shirley passed away. It seems that I go back a long time ago with the Brown/Arena families. I fondly remember seeing Shirley up at the farm running Claybank Stables along with your dad. Good times and good memories. Then along came her newspaper the Sentinel, Shirley hired my daughter Alicia as an intern during the summer months when she was attending St.Bonaventure. Alicia enjoyed working for Shirley and learned so much during those years. She will be missed by so many in the community. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely, Cathy Strong Blodgett

I am a better person having had the privledge to get to know Shirley, Carl & Mike. We will all miss Shirley and all she did for the Community and it's Residents with the newspaper. Shirley was in a way a Rotarian at heart, she always told the truth, was fair, built better friendships through her business and it was always for the betterment of the community. WE are the better for all she has done. WE will miss you Shirley. The Honeoye Falls Mendon Rotary Club.

It's the end of an era for the Town of Mendon and the village of Honeoye Falls with Shirley's passing. She was not only an expert on all things Mendon, she had a connection to the past and the previous newspaper publishers. It was a privilege to know her and share in her laughter.
My thoughts are with her family and friends that are grieving their loss. Please know that the entire town shares in your sadness as we say goodbye to an incredible lady.

Shirley always enjoyed it when I'd bring photos of my husband or my son, to put in the SENTINEL for their birthdays. We'd always share a laugh, as neither of my guys suspected what I was doing. May you rest in peace, Shirley. I'll miss our visits.

At the time of my only visit to the Sentinel office in the 1990s, I was welcomed by one who I learned was Shirley Arena. Her smile remains with me to this day.
God bless her family.

The family are in my thoughts and prayers and I am very sorry for your loss. It has been a privilege to work for Shirley at the Sentinel, and I will always cherish those memories. Although her presence will be sorely missed, her spirit will endure, and our home-town newspaper will go on!
