Mark Hargrave Obituary

Hargrave, Jr.,

Mark Cromwell

Pittsford: Formerly of Brighton, died peacefully in his sleep on February 1, 2015 at age 92. Beloved husband of Barbara (Hutchins) Hargrave; loving father of Ann Loos (husband, Karl), Mark C. Hargrave, III (wife, Mary Ann), and David A. Hargrave (wife, Nancy). Devoted grandfather of eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mark was born in Wymore, NE on February 16, 1922. He attended Dobyns-Bennett High School (Kingsport, TN) and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in chemical engineering. At Nebraska he was president of the ATO fraternity. Following graduation, Mark served in the Philippines during WWII as a first lieutenant in the US Army. After WWII, Mark moved to Rochester and began a career with Eastman Kodak. Mark was active in community affairs including the YMCA, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Rochester Area United Nations and served terms as president of both JCC and RAUN. He was an Eagle Scout and a long-time volunteer in the Otetiana Council of the Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver for Distinguished Service to Youth in 1982. Mark served as a board member of Linden Knoll, a division of the Friendly Home, and was a member of the Institute of Fellows at RIT. Mark was a faithful and active parishioner of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry.

After 35 years at Eastman Kodak, he retired in 1982 as Marketing Director. He founded HHH (Help for the Hard of Hearing) Enterprises and helped organize SHHH (Self Help for the Hard of Hearing). Mark was responsible for the installation of infrared and induction loop systems in churches, nursing homes, theatres, businesses and museums. He was on the national board of HLAA (Hearing Loss Association of America), and the board of the Rochester Hearing and Speech Center. He advocated strongly for the rights of the hard of hearing, most recently working on a local HLAA committee for GEVA theatre. He and his wife were honored with a Community Foundation Philanthropy Award in 2010.

Mark was a man of all seasons, loving fishing, golf, tennis, paddle tennis, and backgammon. His gentle spirit and cheerful nature endeared him to all who knew him.

A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, March 7, 11AM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Rochester Area Community Foundation Clarity Fund, 500 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14607.
