Jay Marx Obituary

Jay, 45, died in a swimming accident July 19, 2015 in North Carolina. Activist, artist, poet, historian, and peaceful revolutionary, Jay's unwavering commitment to humanism and peace advocacy was an inspiration to anti-war and environmental activists around the world. Jay leavened his passion for causes that mattered to him with an irrepressible warmth, unfailing good humor, a genuine and sweet caring nature, and pure joie de vivre. He deeply affected many people and won an array of devoted friends. A Denver native, Jay graduated from Manual High School in 1988 and Colorado College in 1994 as a Boettcher Scholar. Jay's passion for literature and thirst for knowledge fueled his determination to make a difference. Jay served as Coordinator of the Washington Peace Center in Washington DC (2007-2008), where he led the Peace Center's actions marking the 5th anniversary of the US war in Iraq, and traveled to Japan and Vietnam to raise awareness of the impacts of the chemicals and bombs used by the US in the Vietnam War and World War II. He was committed to the passage of the Nuclear Weapons Abolition and Energy Conversion Act, introduced in Congress in April 2015 for the 12th time. Jay's goal in working with prop1.org was to rid the world of nuclear weapons and shut down the nuclear chain. Jay's infectious energy and irresistible smile will be missed by all. He is survived by his mother, Diane Houston Marx, Denver, CO; father, Jon L. Marx, Phoenix, AZ; sister, Meghan Houston Marx, brother-in-law, J. Alex Lawrence; twin niece and nephew, Annabel and Maxwell Lawrence of Brooklyn, NY; and uncle, Jim Houston, Roggen, CO. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jay's memory may be sent to the Washington Peace Center, 1525 Newton St. NW, Washington, DC 20010. Write "Prop1-Jay H. Marx" in the memo line, or a charity of choice. Services pending.

Dear family and friends,
My heart cannot express my shock and pain to know that Jay is now longer here with us. As a testament to his love of life and friends since I knew him back in high school not knowing he was here so close to me in the DC area, I felt him, actually I saw his smile in my mind one day. And found out he was gone.
You all were so lucky and wise to have been in his life. I'm so sorry Jay. I was missing you. You'll forever be a part of my life.

Hey, Jay! Taking a break from this mortal plane, eh? Just was watching some ten year old video I had of you at a peace rally. Been out of things for a while and I just learned today. Have a nice rest and I know you'll come back fighting for peace and justice and freedom again!

Every time I saw Jay, he was always leading. He was so charismatic and such a natural leader that people wanted to be around him. His passion was infectious. Would that we all lead such rich and purpose-driven lives. We miss you, Jay.

Jay Houston Marx was a noble man of peace. Met Jay Marx through is work for nonviolence advocacy in the Green Party. Jay Marx was fun, thoughtful, witty, a joy to be around. He could have become a great Green Party U.S. Senator. Jay Marx was a great, and inspirational advocate for Peace and Nonviolence in our lives, and our politics. Good and noble work, Jay Marx - loved by Greens around the nation, and globe. Thank you, Jay.

I am deeply saddened with Jay's passing and moved by his compassion for humanity. I am not one to post stuff but remember being in a play/musical in high school with Jay (Grease) and he was a wonderful fellow actor and person. Thanks Jay will always honor your life. Amy Moe

Jay was a passionate life force, on fire for justice and deeply committed to a peaceful, just world. You definitely knew which side Jay was on, and it was the right side! He was a poet, a sparkling, cogent master of ceremonies, an adventurer, philosopher. His smile and presence lit up a room. He had a lot of life left to live, but his large, grateful spirit carries on.

Jay brought me so much love and light I feel truly blessed to have our wonderful time together. We protested injustice, we painted windmills on a van, we danced a thousand times and we celebrated life together. Jay is a pure joy in my world. My sincere condolences for all Jay's family and loved ones. Love!

My condolences to Jay's family- Jay possessed so much keenness-- of spirit, of wit, of laughter, of humanity-- always in motion--- The visible motion is gone, but not the motion of the delight that Jay could inspire-- the mischievous sparkle that he carried like a crown to be shared with all the world.
