Jon Winterton Obituary

72, a resident of Denver since first attending CU in 1961, passed away October 4, 2013. He was a professor at UCD for 42 years and continuously active in the college and community. Jon is survived by a daughter, Andrea Helft and three grandchildren of California along with two sisters, Linda Modrak of Florida and Ann Jonas of Oregon. Also among his loving family are nieces Bonnie Needels and Kim Turturro along with Travis Jonas and Todd Jonas. Jon relished his identity as a story teller. His story ended too soon, but it ended great! He had a lot to say and was not shy about saying it. In the last eight years of his life, he reflected much on what brought him to today. Finding a God of his understanding, he many times declared how these were some of the most peaceful and calm days he could ever recall. The calmness was interrupted regularly by the guffaws he let go with as he regaled others, and himself, with his stories of international travel, of professional projects all over the country, of road trips, of family and of his decades in Denver. His commitment to physical, emotional and spiritual fitness may have come late in life, but he did it like he did everything else - full bore. He trudged the road of happy destiny well and was a dear and loyal friend to many of us. Jon's travels with family and friends, were a highpoint throughout his life and his adventures were relished and shared in abundant joy. A memorial gathering in celebration of Jon's life will be on Sunday October 13 at 10:00 a.m. at the concert hall "The Soiled Dove" underneath the Tavern at Lowry, 7401 E. First Avenue, Denver 80203. The family requests contributions to a charity of choice in memory of Jon.

I still can't believe that Jon is gone from this Earth. He was the love of my life. Not the same for him but we remained fond of each other always. Anyone with information about his last days please contact me.

Sweet Jon ~ Oh, how I loved thee. Your joyous laughter rings in my ears and delights my soul. You made me feel appreciated for exactly who I was and who I grew to become. (Poodle skin coat gets an "A" ~ meet "Sleeve" & "Pocket" who arrived before you.) May we meet again ~

Jon was my favorite professor at UCD. He was a great teacher and storyteller. What I enjoyed most about him was his creativity and his practicality. The Communications classes he taught had real-world applications. He would be happy to know that some of what he taught me was passed on and used by a friend in South Africa at the time it was undergoing dramatic changes with the fall of apartheid. Thank you Jon and happy trails!

I am sorry to hear of Jon's passing. I met Jon in 1975 when I began working at UCD in the old Tower Building. I remember his smile, his boundless energy and good humor, and, in those days - his cowboy boots! My condolences to his family and friends.
