Don Friedman Obituary

Former Colorado State Representative Don Friedman, 83 years old, died Aug. 11 in Englewood. A third generation Denverite who lost a narrow race for Congress against Pat Schroeder in 1976, Friedman is remembered as an outspoken 7-term Republican Colorado State Representative (1962-1976), and as a talk radio host on KOA, KIMN, and KTLN. As a legislator with a reputation for fiscal conservatism, Friedman represented Denver and served as Chair of the Joint Budget Committee. He was a moderate on social issues, sponsoring the first clean air legislation in the nation, and was a constant advocate for a woman's right to choose. He was also successful as a real estate developer. Don Friedman was born March 21, 1930 to Louise and Lester Friedman. He graduated from Randall School, and received his B.A. From Wesleyan College and his Masters in Labor Relations from University of California, Berkeley. Friedman lost a race for elected office only once: a run for Congress against Pat Schroeder in 1976, by a narrow margin. After the legislature, he served on the Denver Water Board and consulted for the EPA and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education. Friedman was an active community leader. He was a founding member and past president of Temple Micah. He was a former board president of B'nai B'rith Lodge and board member of Anti-Defamation League, The Bridge Project, and the Hemophilia Foundation. Known for his quick wit, especially puns, Friedman loved golf and travel. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Jeanne Bahne Friedman, daughter Rabbi Dayle Friedman (David Ferleger), sons Glen Friedman (Elizabeth), and Steven Duris (Laura), and grandchildren Anya, Andrew, Jonathan, Anat, Avram, Blake, and Connor. His sister Leslie Friedman Davis predeceased him. He was previously married to Audrey Friedman Marcus. Friedman died after an extended illness. Services will be at 2 P.M. Aug. 13, at Fairmount Mortuary. The family extends its appreciation for the loving care provided by the dedicated staff at Englewood Meridian (3 West) and Denver Hospice. Contributions may be made to The Bridge Project, 2148 S. High Street, Denver, CO 8020 or Denver Hospice, 501 S Cherry St, Ste 700 Denver, CO 80246 or the charity of donor's choice.

During my Young Republicans years, I knew Don. When he ran for the House, his ad on the radio was: First voice: "When you go to the polls, don't forget Don Friedman!" Second voice: "Why? Doesn't he have a ride?" What a memory!
