Robert Cleary Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 4, 2015.
Robert "Rob" E. Cleary, Jr., 71, died peacefully at home in Novato, CA, on August 26, 2015, after a 17-year battle with Parkinson's. Born September 28, 1943, he had an ever-ready smile, engaging sense of humor, and constant good nature that won him devoted, lifelong friends. Graduated from Dartmouth in 1966. In 1967, joined the Marine Corps; served in Vietnam as a bombardier/navigator in the A6 Intruder, flying 208 combat missions, from 1969 to 1970. Received a Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture from Harvard, and an Urban Design degree from the University of Edinburgh. Rob was an avid fly-fisherman, marathon runner, skier, backpacker, squash player, and a four-time Ride The Rockies cyclist. Authored the book, Welcome Intruder, about his Vietnam experiences. In 1988, he opened his firm, Landscape Assoc. in Denver, and in 2002, married the love of his life, Judy Hartley. He is survived by Judy, his sister Susan, and brother John. A celebration of life will be held in Hanover, NH, in the spring of 2016.

A belated shout out to my friend, Rob Cleary, who passed in 2015 (I just found out). We shared many chats, either at my store or at Doc Insomnia's. I read "Welcome Intruder." It was like Rob: straightforward without any braggadocio whatsoever. He had a job and he got it done.

His heroism extended into his long battle with Parkinson's. He'd tell me about a mishap, that he'd fallen and broken something. I'd be grimacing, but he was matter-of-fact about it. Just another thing to overcome. Brave dude. Terrific human being. One of my favorite people. Condolences to his wife, Judy, and the rest of his family.

Take care, brother.

Judy - Rob and I were friends at the DAC and through the 10th Mt. Division hut system. We also shared some flying stories from Viet Nam days. I would appreciate it if you would please notify me so I can inform his other Denver Squash buddies of the memorial next spring. I would want to attend if at all possible. My condolences on your loss. Rob was a great guy.

sounds like the 'same' Rob Cleary I/we knew in Grand Junction Colorado from later 1970's into the 1980's? ran 10k in 38-some, played guitar and sang? this Rob Cleary I remember was a decent good-hearted fun fellow -- must be the same person!
