Gloria Whitfield Obituary

Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, volunteer and dedicated CU fan, found her peace on March 18, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer, at 75. Gloria grew up in Edgewater and attended Edgewater High School. Everyone who knew Gloria knew the only thing more important to her than the athletic programs at The University of Colorado was her family. She was a die-hard Buff fan and a generous supporter of the CU Athletic Department. Gloria attended countless games in Boulder as well as traveling to various cities to support her beloved buffs. More importantly she religiously attended numerous sporting events for her own son's and her grandchildren's over the years. Also close to Gloria's heart was the Bonfils Blood Bank, where she volunteered for thirty years coordinating and attending monthly blood drives in Arvada. Gloria also worked for the Arvada United Methodist Church for 25 years which she enjoyed immensely. She is survived by her husband Robert of 56 years, sons, Bob (Maureen), Dan (Vicki) and Jim (Carmen) and seven grandchildren, Brittany, Brian, Coleen, Toby, Cody, Sean and Alex, sister Caryl DeBroder and brothers Charles, (Jeannie) DeBroder, Glen DeBroder and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her sisters Gladys, Jean and brother Gordon DeBroder. We will miss her family meals, her wry sense of humor and her extremely kind heart. Please join us in celebrating her life on Friday at 11:00AM at the Arvada United Methodist Church, 6750 Carr St., Arvada 80004. Visitation, Friday, 9 AM-7PM, Olinger Crown Hill, 29th & Wadsworth. In Lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Arvada United Methodist Church or the CU Foundation has set up a memorial fund in memory of Gloria. Contributions can be sent to: The CU Foundation, P.O. Box 369UCB, Boulder CO 80309-Gloria Whitfield Memorial Fund. Contact Scott McMichael at 303-492-5695 for additional information. Mom, we love you and will miss you, you will always be in our hearts. Condolences may be offered at CrownHillFuneral.com.

Seeing Gloria was to be reminded to give blood. I consider her a quite advocate for that service as well as a steady volunteer. At Arvada United Methodist Church, she was a quiet and reliable presence. We send our deepest sympaty to the family.

When I was a little girl, Aunt Gloria gave me a tea set for Christmas one year that brought me many years of pleasure. I always loved going to Uncle Rob and Aunt Gloria's house for Christmas Eve and eating Aunt Gloria's famous delicious fudge. Family reunions will not be the same without her. She will be deeply missed.

Whitfield Family, I was so sad when I heard about Gloria today. She was such a beautiful person, I can see her smile and still hear her great laugh. We used to have so much fun when we got together, after we moved I missed her so much. She was my best friend and a lovely lady.

Dear Bob, Bob, Dan, Jim and your families-
My thoughts are with all of you at this time of your great loss.
I remember the first time I met Gloria at Lawrence Elementary School, her smile and warmth of person encompassed all of us who met her that day. After many years Bob the opportunity was granted to meet all of your family again and share another moment in time, but most of all I will remember Gloria and her concerns for people and her generousity of heart. Her enthusiasm for the volunteer work she did for the blood drives and her devotion to her beloved Buffs. That enthusiasm she imparted to all of us. She was a very gracious lady and her love of family whether it was siblings, husband, sons, their spouses or her grandchildren were her greatest joy. May God hold you in his hand and guide you gently through this time of great loss.

I present my deepest condolences to the Whitfields. I will remember Gloria for her gratuitous acts of kindness. She was so generous, and never expected anything in return. She showed by her example how we should treat each other, and the world is a better place for it. Although Gloria is not here with us in flesh any longer, I know her spirit will continue to guide us.

Dear Rob, Bobby, Danny, and Jimmy,
I was so sorry to hear about Gloria! I think as far back as I can remember, our families were intertwined. Well, considering my Mom and Gloria had been friends since the sixth grade in Edgewater. Funny, they had known each other longer than they knew any of us! Wow, now that's what you call a long lasting frIendship! I know my Mom will miss her deeply! Last summer when I was home I had a surprise birthday party for my Mom. Rob, when you came with Gloria I think that was one of the brightest moments for my mom! We were so happy to see both of you and really appreciate the effort it took for you to come!
I hope the wonderful memories that all of you have of the wonderful wife, mother and grandmother will comfort you during this most difficult time. She fought a very brave fight, that shows just how much she loved all of you!!
You're in my thoughts and prayers.

With Love,

Greg Luedke
