DeAnna Packer Obituary

Our loving mother passed away on January 24, 2015. Christ said, "blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." Mom saw God in everyone and everything around her. She lived life joyfully. She chose faith and happiness in a world of uncertainty and pain, and she shared those hopeful gifts without restraint. She was born in Salt Lake City to Darrel and Bertha Welling. In their home she learned to embrace and truly live the teachings of Jesus Christ. Gifts of faith, love, optimism, good humor, and creativity were cultivated bearing fruits of friendship, trust, respect, deep admiration, and abiding love. She was a natural leader and an inspired teacher. In 1959 she married her sweetheart R. Dee Packer. Dad's strengths were the perfect compliment to Mom's. Their fifty-five years of partnership, and the strength of their mutual commitment to each other and to the Savior are gifts beyond price to their posterity. Mom adored her seven children, her twenty-eight grandchildren, and her eight great grandchildren. She found nobility and divinity in motherhood. Her musical gifts and domestic talents enriched her home and community. Her open mind and thirst for learning fueled a lifetime of meaningful conversations and endowed her with a wealth of wisdom. Her eye for the beauties of nature elevated her thoughts and moved her to her knees in daily thanks. Her love for Jesus Christ and her deep devotion to His teachings made her, truly, "an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." Mom, we commend you to His trusted care.
DeAnna is cherished by her husband Dee, her children: Julie (Terry) Miller, Mark (Julie) Packer, Brenda (Chris) Haertel, Brent (Tonya) Packer, Michael David Packer*, Roger (Andrea) Packer, Lori (Wes*) Truman; her brothers Duane, Gene, and Harold Welling; and many other dear family members and friends. *deceased

Dear Packer Family,

I only learned of your mother's passing a couple days ago. Even though it is months later, I hope my sharing is okay.

First I must say -
I adored and loved your mother! She was an especially wonderful example to me in my impressionable late teen years. Her smile, optimistic nature, gentle teasing & wonderful sense of humor were so infectious and I loved spending time with her just chatting away - sometimes even folding laundry as we laughed and enjoyed each other's company. She ALWAYS made me feel so welcome - as a 17-18 year old and even the few times I popped by as an adult. We would visit as if no time had past and that familiar twinkle in her eyes always lifted my spirits.

To know her was to love her - dearly love her. It was impossible not to love her as you felt her unconditional love for you. She always saw the positive in everyone and everything. Her capacity to love was immense and it made such an impression on me. I learned so much from observing and being with her. Because of her influence, I made the goal to have my future home be a place that my children's friends not only felt welcome, but a place they would Want to be - especially the teenagers! Her example has had far reaching effects - more than she probably ever knew. Thank you, DeAnna.

This obituary is so beautiful and a loving tribute to her. To be so loved by her family says it all. If my future obituary has even a small portion of this type of tribute, I will be so honored and grateful.

The last time I saw DeAnna was before my family moved to TN, more than 10 years ago, and so I had no idea how she was doing and what was going on in her and Dee's lives. I was in Utah for 5 weeks this past December, working the Christmas season for my brother, and I had the impression to go for a short visit with her. Unfortunately, I brushed it aside thinking she'd be too busy with her family and all. I deeply regret that now. (Another lesson in following impressions - just do it! 47 years old and I still have more to learn there?! I can hear how DeAnna would tease me and chuckle at that.) Visiting with her for even 5 minutes, seeing that familiar twinkle in her eye, and giving her a hug would have been a cherished blessing.

My prayers are for all of you wonderful Packers, as I'm sure there are days that you greatly miss her. How grateful I am to have known her. How even more grateful I am to know where she is now, and to know of the perfect gift of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For me, losing dear loved ones would be devastating without that knowledge. His gift gives me such comfort and peace. DeAnna strengthened my testimony of the Savior by sharing her's with me. I am eternally grateful for her influence in my life. Thank you 'Mama' Packer.

What a wonderful funeral and such special tributes were given from each of the children! How I loved DeAnna from the time I met her bringing Lori to Sunshine Generation. She would observe my classes and always leave a beautiful, uplifting note! She was truly an angel and so admired by everyone! We loved her darling sense of humor and the sunshine she radiated wherever she was. Also her beautiful, clear, high soprano voice is truly missed in our Ward Choir. Know that she has been a great example to us and has taught us so much. May your family all feel the peace that only our Savior can bring.
Our love always,
Nancy and Ron Whetman

Oh how well I remember sweet DeAnna from the Capitol Hill Ward. She was always so much fun and showed such joy in her countenance. She was a wonderful chorister and could get everyone to sing the hymns. DeAnna's obituary was beautiful, just as she was beautiful. May you feel peace and comfort at this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Susan Perschon Perri

I love Sister Packer, she was so important to my life growing up in the 23rd ward, She taught me to be happy, cheerful, and always look for the best in everything. ( I remember her telling me once "put your dimples to good work", she taught by example. She will be missed. Like Holly, I feel so blessed to know her.

Our dear Dee and DeAnna Packer family, for it will always be this. We are so grateful for the example of pure love and unity we have witnessed in the preparation of your family for the graduation of your angel mother from this mortal sphere to heavenly realms of glory. Seeing Julie, Brenda, and Lori at church week after week as they renewed covenants of faithfulness to family in the midst of magnifying those covenants in the loving care proffered to a worthy father and mother. Oh, it is beautiful, beautiful to us.
Mother is not gone. Spirit Paradise resides here. The veil is thin. She would not have chosen to leave you now to slip behind the curtain of immortality but because she was bidden by Father she obediently concurred and now she now continues the great work of her life, preparing a home for her family and preparing her family for that home. She has lots of help there. You will feel her presence frequently as you continue to think on her, cherish her love, example, and teachings. You are most blessed to be able to count DeAnna Welling Packer as your angel mother for the time of this life and for the eternities. We love you and we thank you again for letting us all be a part of your llives.
Dee, yours is a heavier burden. DeAnna is yours but she is not here to touch, to enjoy, to serve, but you know. You know what you have lived and what you will yet live. The ordinances of the sacred temple make it so. Our arms are around you. We have always loved you, our dear home teacher and friend.
Our love forever Moore, Garry and LaNell

I am so sorry to hear about her passing. One of the fun memories I have of DeAnna is when I sent her flowers for something nice she did for me. The florist put "from John" rather than from Joan. When Dee saw that of course he wanted to know who John was! She let him wonder for awhile and then finally told him. She had a great sense of humor and was one of the most beloved neighbors I've ever had. As a side note, her twins, Brent and Brenda, used to say "Hi, Mr. Lvingston when they saw me outside across the street!
