Harold Peterson Obituary

Harold Burke Peterson
1923 ~ 2013
Every now and then someone in real life merits the title of hero; such is the case with H. Burke Peterson. This valiant and loving soul laid down his mortal cares and honorably left this earth to start his new mission on the other side. Harold Burke Peterson joined his sweet Brookie on April 14, 2013, four months to the day after she left this life for the next. He passed away in the home he loved in Bountiful, Utah at the age of 89, surrounded by his daughters on either side of the veil, leaving behind a legacy of unconditional love, service, commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ and countless individuals eternally changed by his sweet countenance and loving care.
On September 19, 1923, Burke was blessed to be the first of four sons of Harold Anton and Juna Tye Peterson. This "well-matched team" raised the four brothers with tender attention, caring discipline, and abundant affection in the dry heat of the Arizona tumbleweeds. With a foundation of hard work, obedience, honesty and the gospel never were four brothers more dedicated to the personal welfare of each other-Burke loved each one.
World War II broke out and shortly after his 19th birthday, Burke joined the Navy in 1942. He underwent training and eventually served in the South Pacific as a commissioned Ensign and Seabee. He returned home to finish his Bachelors Degree at the University of Arizona, but found something even better: Brookie Mae Cardon. She surprised him when she introduced herself and then proceeded to ask him to the girls' choice dance, and he enthusiastically pursued the relationship. After 63 days of courtship, Burke asked his beloved Brookie to marry him. From there they were soon sealed in the Mesa Arizona Temple on June 27, 1947. The two sweethearts journeyed to Logan, Utah where they finished a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering and began their family. Their home was eventually blessed with five daughters who watched their parents continue their courtship throughout their lives. The "Five Lovelies" were each given love, security and meaningful attention that was later extended to grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The young family eventually settled down back in Arizona where Burke worked for the U.S Department of Agriculture and then became a founding partner in the Engineering Corporation of America in 1955. During this time he served diligently in the church as a bishop, stake president, and a regional representative of the Twelve. In the April 1972 General Conference, be was called by President Joseph Fielding Smith as First Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric. He faithfully left his engineering career and moved with his family to Bountiful, Utah to fulfill this calling for the Lord. He served in this position until 1985 when he became a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy, later serving with his wife Brookie as the President and Matron of the Jordan River Utah Temple. He was also extensively involved with the Boy Scouts of America and the management of Adam-ondi-Ahman. Throughout all his years of service, he was rarely found without Brookie by his side. They traveled, spoke and worked together until Burke was granted Emeritus status as a General Authority in 1993.
At a young age, Burke's testimony of the gospel blossomed as he learned the value of personal prayer and scripture study. His life was blessed as he dedicated himself to the Lord, and in turn he blessed the lives of so many others. His family and close friends will miss his happy spirit, crushing bear hugs, sweet nicknames, and enthusiasm that never failed to bring us cheer. We have never known a greater champion of the underdog, the outcast, or the down trodden. His life will continue to be a model of righteous living to those he has left behind. We can only hope to follow his example and cannot wait to see him again.
He is preceded in death by his dear wife Brookie; his parents; one brother, Evan Tye Peterson; and two daughters: Sherrie (Roger) Decker and Robin (James) Pedersen. He is survived by three daughters: Gayle (William) Steele, Jana (Mark) Staples, and Keri (Bruce) Nielsen; two brothers, John Richard and Robert Warren Peterson; innumerable nieces and nephews; 24 grandchildren; and 58 great-grandchildren. In total, Burke and Brookie's progeny total 111 very blessed souls.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April. 20, at 11:00 a.m. at the Bountiful Hills Ward Building, 1190 E. Bountiful Hills Drive, Bountiful, UT. Viewings will be held on Friday, April 19, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main St., Bountiful, UT, and Saturday, April 20, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Bountiful Hills Ward Building prior to the funeral service. Interment will immediately follow at the Lakeview Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the LDS Missionary Fund.

I have admired Burke for decades and loved serving with him in the 70 quorum. He was a man with no pretenses and genuine concern for the Lord and the Father's children. Karen and I miss him and Brookie. We were away at his passing and the services, but now pay him eternal honor.

We mourn the loss of a great and wonderful man who was never hesitant to befriend the forgotten and friendless, and champion and bolster the cause of struggling members of the Church with his own sterling reputation and integrity. Like the Savior he served, “we love him because he first loved us.”

We are very sorry about the passing of your wonderful parents. They were so lucky to go "together"! They were a great blessing in our lives. Bishop Burke Peterson took me to do baptisms at the Mesa temple when I was eight years old. I will never forget that. May the Lord bless you and comfort you as you adjust to their passing. I and my Family had the pleasure of knowing this magnificent man through my Sister Leora Myers. She was his secretary for many many years at the Church Office Building until her passing and her fight with Cancer took her in 2000. He spoke at her funeral. He is one Magnificent example of Our Dear Lords Work.

April 20, 2013

Dear Ones...Sending you my love in the loss of your father. I think of him with great fondness. He was the first Bishop I remember in my life and I think he is the reason I esteem the office of Bishop with such reverence. It certainly is a blessing to have his signature on my baptismal certificate. I have been accompanied by many pleasant memories of him since I read of his passing. God bless you, every one. To Gayle, Jana, and Keri: We are so sorry to hear about Burke's passing so soon after Brookie's. They have always been our favorite cousins or "kissing cousins" as Burke called us. My (Rayola) mother (Emily)and Uncle Harold were brother and sister, and it has been years since we have seen you girls. Your parents were the best people anyone could ask for. We are really going to miss them, but what a reunion they are having with Sherrie and Robin and other family members. Aunt Edith doesn't think it is fair that younger family members are going before she is, but for 101 she is doing great. We are going to miss visiting with your mom and dad and enjoying their sense of humor. Our prayers are with you and your families.
Love, Rayola and Rod Collard, SLC UT

Dear Family of H. Burke Peterson,
Bonnie and I extend our love and condolences at the passing of your dear Patriarch and our dear friend. Burke was an example of integrity, honor and faith. It was an honor to serve with him in the Quorums of the Seventy. His judgement and spirit was exceptional. We served on committees together where his sensitivity to the needs of others and to the promptings of the Spirit blessed the lives of many.
May the sweet peace of the Lord abide with you during these tender times of your loss.
With love and faith,

Phillip Kunz

Dear Peterson Family. I fished with Burke and hunted rabbits, although he carried no gun. Evan and Burke were fun to fish with. When Burke and Brookie moved to Bountiful, our son, Johnathan and my wife, Joyce and I Helped work in the yard. Burke always had a smile and we loved him and Brookie. Best to you. Dear Peterson Family,
We enjoyed knowing this good man through our beloved aunt Leora Myers, who was his secretary for many years. His love of black licorice jelly beans had kept Leora scouring the area for them, to keep in the office at the church office building. When he became President of the Jordan River Temple, she switched to white jelly beans for his temple office. There was a joke that there were the same amount of jelly beans in the last day at that office as there was in the first day.
Elder Peterson and his sweet wife were wonderful to Leora, and we appreciated their fondness of her. Thanks for having such a wonderful man to share!
Lovingly, from Leora's niece

Dear Peterson Family - I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Elder Peterson and his wife (who passed 4 months ago). My deepest condolences are extended to the family. My mind immediately went to Keri and her siblings. She and I were in a several same Geography classes at BYU, when Elder Peterson was Pres. of the Jordan River Temple. I have always remembered her fondly, and having lost my parents in a plane crash 20 years ago, I know what it feels like to lose your Mom and Dad. Please know y'all are in my prayers. So very thankful for Elder Peterson and his wonderful messages through the years. I LOVED his talks! I remember him coming to Texas and talking in our Stake and i approached him afterward and asked about Keri, at the times I think he said she lived near Houston or Austin? He always had direct and inspirational messages for the Saints. Am so grateful for the peace, comfort, and knowledge the Gospel brings us during these difficult times. Dear Peterson Family,
Burke came into our lives as he was released as a general authority and assigned to be our home teacher. We do not have words to express how much he gave to our whole family, especially through the trial of our son's near fatal car accident. Our lives have been changed for the better by this great and humble man. We are honored to call him and his dear Brookie our friends, now and forever.

April 18, 2013

Dear Family,
I will always remember my dear cousin Burke and his lovely wife Brookie. He has been a great cousin and a good friend.
Although they grew up in Mesa, they were cousins we loved.
Aunt Juna was my favorite, and my mother Jessie was the baby. The last time I spoke to Burke was at Evan's funeral. May the Lord bless his family and may his life strengthen our testimonies of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. The resurrection awaits us all, in the Kingdom of God.
Love and best wishes,

Our deepest sympathy to a great man and equally wonderful family. As Sherrie Decker's next door neighbor for many years we became well acquainted with H. Burke and Brookie. Our association was further enriched during our family service at Adam-ondi-Ahman. He will always be remembered as a man who's life "touched ours for good."

My love and sympathy to Gayle, Jana, Keri and family. Burke was one of my favorite leaders. I was the first missionary he set apart as a stake president. What a great blessing he gave me. My dad (Reed) served with him in the stake presidency and loved him like a brother. He was my favorite speaker at General Conferences. Sherry was part of our gang of teenagers who loved to party together often. What a great reunion she is having with her parents now.
