I enjoyed playing basketball and other sports with "Brother Stan" and his brother Cal. As my bishop, he called me to serve as a missionary in Brazil, which became one of the highlights of my life. He was competitive but kind, friendly and fun, diligent and dedicated, happy and humble. So many good memories!

I have many memories of working for the Smoots in 1990. I remember Shandell coming home from his mission and I see the resemblance with his father's younger obituary photo. I know Stan Smoot loved Centerville, the gospel of Jesus Christ, he was proud of his family, cared for and loved his wife, he loved people and talking to them. He was happy about his time spent in Ohio as a Mission President. He would talk about the growth in Centerville and how far we could go east and hit the mountains and he could walk to the lake in 7 minutes from his backyard and be downtown to Temple Square in just minutes. I remember when the "idea" of Eaglewood was being talked about and that area of land was over a little fence at the end of the road. I see the beautiful homes and developments that have been built in this area because of his vision and hard work. A life well lived. A wonderful wife in Mary Ellen and an impressive legacy for the Stan and Mary Ellen Smoot family.
Thoughts and prayers for you. Cherish your memories and the Patriarch you were all blessed to have!

June and I share your loss and send our love. We so much enjoyed being in your presence.

January 20, 2012

I first met Stan many years ago when he was my seminary teacher at Bountiful High School, and I have admired and loved him ever since. He was an amazing seminary teacher. He loved the gospel and Jesus Christ, and we all knew it. And that love grew and expanded into remarkable public service to his church and community. He was a visionary leader to both Davis County and the business community. John and I feel privileged to have known Stan, and even more privileged to have worked with him and Smoot family members in the Eagle Point project. We extend our love and prayers during this challenging time, but we know our future reunion will be joyous, particularly for you.
With condolences,

Sister Smoot and family,

President Smoot was an outstanding mission president. His energy and excitement, especially for planning, was contagious. His spirit penetrated the Ohio Columbus Mission. He had such a profound impact upon the lives of the missionaries in which he presided. Of course he couldn't have done so without you, his beloved eternal companion by his side. Thanks for sharing this man with us missionaries. Tom and I will always remember our times in the mission home as we served together. Our spoils consisted of some of your meals--definitely more than any other missionary in the mission field as we lived in the basement of the mission home for our three months of service together. Thanks. Love, Todd Udall

Shandell, my twin brother, Tom, and I sure enjoyed our gospel discussions with you. We loved our times together. Fond memories!

The Lord's eternal plan gives us hope knowing we haven't seen the last of this wonderful man! Sympathies.

Our family (Marlow and Leone Fisher and children) always thought of the Smoots as family and have many fond memories of Stan, his brother and sisters. Stan was a good man and will be missed. We send our love and our genuine sympathy in the passing of our trusted friend Stan. His positive outlook and love for all people has certainly been felt and admired. We loved our years of living as your neighbors and appreciate all you did to make our Eaglewood experience on Aerie Circle such a memorable time. Stan always had a warmth and goodness that we enjoyed. He will be missed but his engaging smile and spiritual strength live on in the lives of your precious children and grandchildren.
Mary Ellen, thank you for your exemplary life along side such a noble eternal companion. We have learned from both of you and we are so sorry to be outside of Utah and unable to attend the viewing or funeral.
Much love,

Mary Ellen--

I was so sorry to read about Stan's passing. Hope he and Lynn get a chance to see each other--he passed away on Lynn's 85th birthday--Lynn's been gone nine years. Lynn thought so much of Stan and what he did for Scouting. I still have on the wall of my hall the three calendar boards that you people gave us many, many years ago. I couldn't manage without them. You're so fortunate to have many family members--hope several of them live close. I couldn't manage without my family members

Sincerely,

Norma Jean Austin

Dear Mary Ellen (and Stan), seeing you two working together in your yard, or participating in a televised public event or at church or where ever it might have been that I saw you, you were always together. Every single time I saw you two together I was inspired to be a little closer a little kinder a little genteler to my delicate little bride. Thank you both for being a great example for me to try and follow. Joe Torres, Jr. (Elk Hallow)

It was such a shock to read about the passing of Stan. He will be sorely missed. It has been an honor and privilege to know and work with Stan for the many years he was in business. He was a man of high integrity and it was a pleasure to be his friend and business associate. In many of our conversations, he was always expressing his love for his wife Mary Ellen and his family. Since retiring, we spend our winters in Yuma Arizona so we are sorry that we can't be there for his services.

Best Wishes

Dear Mary Ellen and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of the passing of our dear friend and home teacher. We still talk of the love and kindness that President Smoot showed us as our home teacher. He and Shane taught us how to keep the Sabbath day and how to teach our children to observe the Sabbath. He brought us a large cookie jar that we keep in our kitchen for many years. In additin to his many important callings, he always took the time to take care of us. We love him and we love your family. Please know of our support and prayers. Dennis and Margaret Lifferth.

Dear Special Smoot family,
The legacy and impact of one of the Father's greatest servants can not be expressed in words that are available to Ruth and Me. President and Sister Smoot are of the greatest teachers, leaders and motivators that we have had the distinct honor and privilege to associate with. To a great extent what I am today or have become, is directly attributable to President Smoot.May the peace of the gospel and the reality of the Plan of salvation bring solace and true happiness to all the family. We love and appreciate, more than you will ever know our treasured association with many of your special family.

My condolences to all of your family. I have such marvelous memories of you. One, in particular, comes to mind. One fast and testimony meeting when I was fairly young I wanted to get up and bear my testimony, but was frightened. I was sitting on the front row of the chapel (the old building on North Main Street). Then- Bishop Smoot noticed my hesitancy and gestured to me to come up. That gave me the courage to do so and I have been grateful for that throughout my life. Sister Smoot was one of my valued Primary teachers. So, this passing touches me as it does many. May you all be comforted in the knowledge that your husband, father, grandfather was deeply loved and appreciated by many.

Grandpa we'll miss you so much! You made everyone around you a better person because you uplifted them with kind words of affirmation. You are one of kind, so unique in your gift to brighten every room and coax a smile from every face. You accomplished so much without ever being efficient with people. You were a supreme motivator of people. And you treated everyone, no matter if they were a two year old or in a nursing home, like they were a VIP. You'll always be remembered. You left us a legacy of love, living life to its fullest and faith. Love you Grandpa!
