Barbara Kemp Obituary

Barbara McMullin Kemp 1927 ~ 2010 The prettiest peach to be harvested from Dixie's red soil was the lovely Barbara McMullin. Born May 16, 1927 in Leeds, Utah, Barbara was hand-picked, fully ripe and sweet, and gently carried back to her heavenly home on January 17, 2010. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence McMullin and Margaret Mary Savage, and her brother Larry McMullin. Left behind are her truest friend and husband Shirl D Kemp, and their sons Dale (Elaine), Blaine (Sheri), Bruce (Terri), and Kevin (Pamela), 21 grandchildren, great-grandchildren numbering 33 with four on the way, and her brother Keith McMullin. She attended a two room schoolhouse in Leeds through eighth grade and graduated from Dixie College High School in 1945. Student councils, student body presidencies, cheerleading squads, basketball teams, and orchestra clubs benefited from her membership. She was chosen Dixie's Rodeo Queen in 1945. She uprooted and replanted herself in Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah in 1945, met her sweetheart Shirl Dale Kemp on a blind date, and married him October 29, 1947 and later was sealed with their four sons in the Manti Temple 28 Feb. 1968. She served as a member of the Board of Directors for the credit union - UCCU and the Utah Transit Authority - UTA and served as secretary and bookkeeper for many corporations. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she taught and led auxiliaries including president of the Edgemont 3rd Ward Relief Society and Education Councilor in the Edgemont South Stake RS Presidency. Barbara has plowed on through many challenges including nurturing her husband through several near fatal illnesses. She has watered, nourished, and cultivated all who knew her till the Father, the Master Gardener, said, "Come home." To Barbara, a "tree of righteousness, the planting of the Lord" Isaiah 61:3, and from those of us still hanging on the tree, we say, "We love you forever, we honor you eternally, and we miss you enormously till our own harvest brings us home." Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Edgemont 21st Ward Chapel, 2900 N. Timpview Drive (2900 North 650 East), Provo, Utah. Friends may call at the church Thursday evening from 6 until 8 and Friday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Provo City Cemetery. Condolences may be emailed to [email protected]. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Perpetual Education Fund.

The plants she watered, fertilized and tended included me too. Even by proxy I was caught in her rake and I'm stronger and straighter because of it.

Thank you, Barbara.

Dear Kemp Family,
One of my most cherished treasures is that Barbara was/is my "other mother." She always made me feel so special and loved. I will be forever grateful for her example and sweet ways. She will have a special place in heaven, and she was always an angel here on earth. Thanks to the whole Kemp family for the love throughout the years...

Bishop Kemp was the Bishop when we moved to the Edgemont area and his loving wife was so sweet to us and for years have provided us with BYU Basket ball tickets where we set next to them and enjoyed so much their company. She is an elect lady we will miss her very much. Love Elder and Sister Workman Kirtland Ohio.
