Gary Clifford Bryner 1951 ~ 2010 Gary Clifford Bryner, 58, died peacefully at home in Provo, Utah, on March 10, 2010, of cancer. He was born in Salt Lake City on April 15, 1951, to Clifford Gault and Barbara Fairholm Bryner. They have three children: Benjamin (Kelly Hunter), Nicholas (Carly Winston) and Jonathan (Tallia Feltis), and three granddaughters: Eve, Portia and Alice. Gary graduated from Highland High School in Salt Lake City, and completed BA and MS degrees in economics at the University of Utah. He taught at Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City for two years. He received his PhD in government from Cornell University in 1982. He was director of the University of Colorado's Natural Resources Law Center in Boulder from 1999 to 2001. He served on the board of directors of the Inter-American Foundation and the Mali Rising Foundation, organizations that work to alleviate poverty in developing countries. Gary loved his associations with students and frequent travels with his family and students to study in Washington DC, Paris, and northern Mexico. In his writing he sought to advance ideas and policies to promote civic engagement and fairness. Over years of teaching, he inspired a great many students from varied backgrounds to believe in their abilities to make a difference. Gary was a faithful and devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a missionary in the France-Switzerland Mission, and served with love in many capacities in the church throughout his life. He was an extraordinarily loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. I'm just seeing this (Jan 2022). I'm a political scientist and wondered why I haven't seen Gary at meetings. So sorry about losing him. A fine scholar and wonderful person.

March 16, 2010

Dear Jane and Family: Our hearts ache that we have lost a good friend. We were out of town, and unfortunately didn't hear the news in time to come to the funeral. Our memories of you and Gary both go back a long way, and they are all warm and treasured. Bart's association with Gary in the priests' quorum all those years ago left a lasting impression and a true connection. Subsequent visits over the years only served to reiterate all the good we already knew about you both. Just know our love and thoughts are with you now and in the days and weeks to come. Gary will live on in the love and service and kindness and strength he obviously gave to so many.

I have two distinct memorie of Gary Bryner. My favorite is meeting him on a walk with his wife as he casually discussed the needs of the city with me and my friend, I realized that he was a man who looked beyond his own life and saw into the needs of others, near and far. I only had two conversations with him in life, and in both he exuded care and concern for his community.

I had one class from Gary and it was probably the single most influential class I had in helping me decide to pursue a Ph.D.- I am sure Gary would never know that and perhaps would not even remember me since it was not my major or even close to it- great person with a remarkable gift in the classroom and a passion that was easy to see and I am sure influenced many for good- a sad loss

Dear Jane and Family:

I was so shocked and saddened to read the news that Gary has passed away. I found out too late to attend the funeral today. I am so sorry, I would have loved to have been there. Gary was such a wonderful neighbor, friend and cook! I appreciate so very much your friendship and help through the years as neighbors.

Gary helped me through some very difficult challenges and he was truly a wonderful example of a priesthood leader in the neighborhood. He always quietly served so many. I wish I had known that he had become ill. I would have come by to visit.

Jane, boys, and family, I want to express my love and sympathy to you all, in this time of such great loss and sorrow. I am sure the Savior will say to him, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." I pray that the spirit will send comfort and peace to your hearts, knowing that he lives and that you will all be together again at the end of this life.

Love your neighbor and friend,

My first exposure to Dr. Bryner was as a student in his Introduction to Public Administration course in 1987. Dr. Bryner's lectures were captivating and awoke a desire in me to pursue graduate studies in Public Administration. I remember sitting down in his office during my senior year and discussing my graduate school options. I appreciated his willingness to help me and to provide me with very helpful advice that led me to attend graduate school in Washington, DC, earn an MPA and work at the US Treasury Department. The BYU family has lost a wonderful man who was truly committed to his profession as well as to helping his students. My best wishes go out to his family at this most difficult time.

Dr. Bryner was one of my professors at BYU 15 years ago. He possessed that rare combination of a brilliant mind and a gentle demeanor, and was never too busy to chat with his students. My condolences to his loved ones on the premature loss of this great man.

Dear Jane&Gary(if you are keeping an eye on this), Ben&Kelly,Nick&Carly, Jon&Tallia,
I share my love with you all and pay tribute to a very fine man.
Gary had the best arm as a neighborhood quarterback; as a ward basketball player he had a good outside shot and entertaining homemade gym shorts. He had an easy-going, warm personality and a good sense of humor.
He spent his entire life time and life force in love and support of his family and church. He advocated for those that needed a break in life and for the earth. God speed, Gary !
Jane and all, you are in our prayers all the time. We love you deeply.
Mark

Jane,Gary (if you're keeping an eye on this), Ben,Kelly, Nick,Carly, Jon&Tallia,
Heartfelt and loving wishes from a former LFAA (lower filmore athletic association) member, a friend and a brother. I have so many terrific memories of time spent with Gary. Gary had a super arm as a neighborhood quarterback and an accurate shot (with colorful gym trunks) as an Imperial Ward BB player. He had a warm and kind heart, and unconditional love for all those he met.
He spent the time and force of his life serving his family, his church and advocating for any person in need or at disadvantage, and for the earth.
He showed uncommon and steady courage as he LIVED the last year of this life. Our prayers for each of you.
With love and admiration,

Dear Jane and each member of your fine family.
I am so grateful for the special associations, that I have enjoyed with you.
You have all been examples to follow. Giving service to others has been a daily habit for Gary and Jane and all of you. I have been a frequent recipient of delieious, hot, homemade bread, and warm friendship.
Very recently Gary gave a memorable talk in Church to inspire us.
You have both been very grateful for a little more time granted to be together as a family and to enjoy your beautiful grandchildren. The children can rejoice in a heritage to be grateful for and to emulate.
You have all brightened my life.
Love, Selene S. Oates

It seems such a short time ago that Gary visited us while we were in Paris and brought wonderful pastries with him. We cut them up with a knife so that everyone got to savor each one. We will miss him so much. With love, Elaine and Earl Fry

Your family will be in our hearts. He will be missed greatly. I will never forget the two of you putting up our playset and shower curtain rods; I have kept that memory near to my heart for many years. Gary was a man of great heart and pure intent. Both students and faculty colleagues loved him.

This is a total blast from the past and so sorry to hear of Gary's passing. Growing up a few years younger than both Gary and Jane in Imperial ward by heart goes out to you Jane and your family. I remember Gary as such an example and Jane your family and the Bryner family gives me many great memories. This makes the 2nd person (Vivian Jensen) being the other, that brings fond thaughts of my childhood. The dead end part of Fillmore Street has lost two wonderful people in my mind the past few weeks. I send my love to you Jane and your family.
