Herbert Hillier Obituary

Herbert Miles Hillier
"Friend to Everyone"
Herbert "Herb" Hillier died on Saturday November 19, 2011 after living life to the fullest for 92 years.
Herb was born in Pocatello, Idaho on August 13, 1919 but spent most of his childhood in Murray, Utah. He was the only child of Herbert and Edith Jennett Hillier. He lost his father at the young age of six and his mother just after graduating from High School.
He served in the Army during World War II. He often recounted his experiences in Germany and France including his role during the "Battle of the Bulge". Two years after returning home, he married his sweetheart and the love of his life Merrilynn Godfrey on September 10, 1947 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Until his last breath he was lovingly devoted to her. The couple had two sons; Kevin and Brett. Herb was a very supportive and loving Father. He taught "his boys," how to play the game of golf and he never missed one of their musical concerts. He loved them with all of his heart.
Herb graduated from Utah State University with a BS degree in 1952. He later obtained a Masters of Education and Administration Degree. Herb was a teacher and a Vocational Guidance Counselor in the Ogden School District for 35 years. He helped countless youth stay on track or plan for the future. The students loved him.
He loved to play golf, swim and work out at the gym. He also enjoyed eating out at restaurants with his wife, often including Elizabeth, his sister-in-law whom he adored.
At a young age Herb began playing the drums. In high school he received many percussion awards and honors. Through the years he traveled to most of the Western States playing concerts, rodeos, parades, night clubs and even at the San Francisco World's Fair. He was a member in several bands including a Military Band, "The Four Sounds" and the "Lenny Wight Band." He also taught many students in the Ogden area how to play the drums, including his two sons and his two grandsons. He loved listening to jazz music and often said his favorite drummer was Joe Morello.
He also served as President of the Musicians Union Local 356 for three years.
Herb brightened up any room he entered and made friends everywhere he went. We will miss Herb's kind and gentle nature as well as his bright outlook and quick wit.
He is survived by his wife Merrilynn, sons Kevin (Karen), Bret; brother-in-law, Ralph (Ruth) Godfrey, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lott; granddaughters, Cortni (Sean) Johnson, Camdin (Josh) Oltrogge, Bethany (Taylor) Burnham, and grandsons Tanner and Ryan Hillier; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Friends will meet with family on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
Interment, Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. with Military Honors provided by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
