Dear Ruth and family -
I spent much of my childhood growing up with my great grandma, Ruby Draper. As a young child I remember Keith and the "good ol' OP Skaggs". I would frequent the store just to see him. I was only 6 or so, but even then appreciated him for the wonderful person he was. He always had a smiling face and a heart bigger than the store. They just don't make them like him and my Nana anymore. I can only hope that I take the hard work and good values that I learned from them and pass them on to my children.
Although I haven't seen Keith in over 30 yrs I feel a great loss in his passing. He was truly a one of kind. I'm fortunate to have known him and shared many childhood memories of Glendale and Mission Rd with him and the store.
Sincerely,
Tracy Cutler

I just stumbled on the news that Mr.Oborn had died. I remember him from over 40 years ago when our family moved to Glendale. I went to school with Brian and Brent, and this family has suffered some terrible losses in the past couple of years. I have such sweet memories of going into O.P. Skaggs as a kid. I hope the many messages here from people like me will bring some comfort to the Oborn family. I think of men like Keith Oborn as the salt of the earth.

I was so sorry to hear about your loss. What a wonderful person and wonderful memories we have of Keith in our lives. He blessed so many peoples lives in so many ways. I remember how he would call our home and see if my son could come help him make a delivery of groceries to widows in the ward. His love, caring and generosity to others will never be forgotten! keep calling those square dances. i used to square dance three or four times a week with my first wife starring out with y squares at byu with earl beck back in the middle 1960's to pieces of eight in murray and two other clubs one in orem and the other one in salt lake city. i vividly remember square dancing in the old social hall at this is the place monument and even in the salt palace or on west temple in front of the sslt palace. do a dance with your relatives and do-sa-do with your mother and other relatives. as one call goes "load the boat", bishop oborn, you have "loaded" your boat with thousands and thousands of wonderful memories from those that have come to love and know you and your christ like mannerism. may our heavenly father watch over your eternal family is my fervent and solemn prayer in the blessed name, even our lord jesus christ, amen. elder richard kenyon kendall.

My heart is full. Oh how we love this man! What an inspiration to so many people. I cannot count how many times I have quoted Bishop Oborn to many home teaching families and to my children. We send our love to you, Sis Oborn, and to all of your family. One note to make you smile - or at least make a face - brownies with dog poop; one of my favorite Bishop Oborn metaphors.

So sadden by his passing. Knowing Keith has truly been a blessing. I have lived in the Glendale area for 44 years two blocks from Keith and Ruth. Was an avid customer to the O.P. Staggs grocery store. When I entered his store,Keith was always hard at work, and always a smile on this face with a freindly hello calling me always by my first and last name. His great customer service skills never went unnoticed. It didn't matter that I was not a member of his faith, he always made me feel so welcome when I would visit Cannon 3rd Ward for church functions, or seeing him out and about.
Keith was a kind, loyal and truly a man of God. He leaves with me many memories that will never be forgotten.
May the love of Christ be with each and everyone of you, and PEACE be with you and your family.
May a flight of angles take him to his rest. God Bless.

My deepest condolances to your family. He was an awesome man!!! My family lived just a block away, and when my husband and I got married in 1980 he would let us grocery shop and sign the receipt as a promise to pay! If it wasn't for him, as a young couple with babies we would have faced many hungry nights!! I don't know if I have ever met a more kind and compassionate man!!! My life and many others lives have been greatly enriched by knowing him...My prayers are with you and your family...Laura Valdez Bradley

I thank you for helping my children and being there for me. We are grateful for Kieth and saddened by his passing. He would always manage to put food on my porch at the exact times I was needing it. Ruth and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Keith is such a great man. I feel like I have known Keith forever. I remember going to the meat counter with my dad for bologna when I was small, and always getting a sample because we might want to test it out first. I have great memories of working with your family in the store. He helped instill in me a strong work ethic, and showed by example how to be a caring human being. Keith will be missed on earth, but heaven is smiling a little more. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Keith Oborn was a real blessing to the lives of the Yospe family. In 2008 I wrote a story for the Deseret News "Christmas I remember best" where he played a big part. My father, Max, was in the hospital that year with polio, leaving our family looking at a bleak Christmas. Max and Keith had become friends as Keith had many friends in that little Glendale area. I will copy a few parts of that story for you here: "The store owner had grown to like the big policeman who often came shopping with his wife. Maybe this was why he had done something he had never done before when the mother had shown up with a child's wagon loaded with empty pop bottles she had collected from neighbors and friends to buy a few groceries. He had suggested to her that the store needed someone to bake fresh cakes that he could sell in his little O.P. Skaggs grocery store to other customers. So several times a week she would appear with more empty bottles, buy flour, sugar, cocoa and other groceries to take home. Then the following day bring in rich chocolate cakes just warm from the oven. It was his little secret that when other customers showed up shopping to redeem their empty glass bottles, he would load them up again for a late night drop on the porch of the little yellow house." The help he gave us that year and the friendship went on forever. May you know that Keith was loved and respected by all. I am sorry for your loss.

Dearest Ruth, and family of sweet Bishop Oborn, My heart is full of wonderful memories of this gentle giant. Some of my fondest include my little children waiting at the door in the early morning for the "Milk Bishop" He would take time to deliver milk, eggs, cheeze, bread to so many families each day. For some in the Glendale area this may have been the only food they had that day. It did not matter if they were members of the Cannon 3rd ward or not he went often door to door delivering to make sure needs were met. His spirit was so strong he one of the reasons my children love the gospel. He took time as our bishop to know them well and make sure their testimonies grew strong. He is a big part of of the reason my son is now serving a mission. My cherished memory is, Many times after he had served all day and late in the eve as Bishop he would walk home past our house and if a light was on he would knock and ask me to play him a few Hymms on my guitar before he went home. I would get to the about the 2nd song and he would be asleep sitting on the sofa and soon the phone would ring and dear Ruth would say, "Hey Stumpp family will you wake the Bishop up and tell him to come home." It was always a treasure for us to sing and play music for such a wonderful servant of the Lord. May our Heavenly Father bless and keep you during this sad time. Much Love

I was saddened to learn of Keith's passing. Having grown up immediately behind OP Skaggs, I have many fond memories of Keith and times spent at his little market. His booming voice and cheerful disposition made a huge impression on me as a young girl. Years later, when a newlywed, Keith even called a square dance for us at a church dance. Even more important, Keith had a huge impact on our family before I was even born. My mother was trying to take care of her two children while my father was in the hospital being treated for polio in the early 50's and Keith helped my mother in her struggles. He helped her by selling her delicious homemade chocolate cakes in his bakery case at OP Skaggs. My mother put food on the table and made ends meet with the money she received from the sale of those cakes. I know I am one of many who have many fond memories of Keith Oborn . . . a large man with a large heart. May memories of happy days with your husband, father, and grandfather bring comfort at this difficult time.

Sister Oborn:
I was really shocked to hear that your Husband Keith had passed away. When my wife mele told me about it I couldn't believe it. I have known members of your family since the late 1970's when your son Leon and I were Home Teachers back in Magna, UT and then I had the wonderful opportunity to be reunited with your very special family when we moved into the Copper Hills Fifth Ward and there met your son Brian. Even though he was dealing at the time with his karen's illness, I remember how he would always ask me how I was doing since he knew I had my own medical issues. Then when we left that ward and moved into our duplex in the Cannon Third Ward, I once again was reunited with your husband. Mele and I remember him bringing goodies every week over to our home every day and during this past summer, he would sometimes come over to see how our swamp cooler was working after he had been over to Aitu's home. He was a giant among men and I will miss my good friend in our Priesthood Meeting since I would always try to sit on the same row where he was sitting. You and your family have Mele's and my deepest sympathy regarding the loss of you husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. I will call into each temple in the valley and have your family put on the prayer roll. Thank goodness for the gospel of Jesus Christ in our loves and for the knowledge that we have concerning being able to see our loved ones once again.
Love, Elder Richard Kenyon Kendall, Mele Catherine Kendall and our entire family.
