LESLEY GOATES Obituary

Lesley Drew Goates 4/25/1952 ~ 6/28/2011 "We may not know, we cannot tell what pains He had to bear, but we believe it was for us He hung and suffered there." (Hymns, No. 194).Lesley Drew Goates, 59, died quietly in his sleep on June 28, 2011. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on April 25, 1952, to L. Brent and Helen L. Goates, the third of their six children. Drew attended East High School, where he played football and shared his musical talents in many enjoyable experiences with all his friends. In the first game of his senior year he suffered a severe neck injury that left him in lifelong pain. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Australia East Mission. When he returned he married Jane Stephenson in the Salt Lake Temple. They had four children, Christopher, Julie, Katie and Ryan. He was later divorced, however Drew remained a loving father to his family throughout his life. Drew's life was filled with much sorrow, but he pressed on and enjoyed many happy times surrounded by those who loved him. His degree of difficulty in his mortal experience became even more extraordinary when he contracted multiple sclerosis later in life. In the pain he endured he seized the opportunity to live in courage and love. In recent years he often expressed the need to help others avoid the suffering he experienced throughout his life. Perhaps now he can realize that dream. He taught us the meaning of the words, "Even this," applies to Christ's healing power when believed and applied. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen L. Goates, his infant daughter Julie and his son Ryan. He is survived by his children, Christopher and Katie (Ryan Ludwig), a grandson Ryan Joshua, with another grandchild on the way, his father, L. Brent Goates, siblings David (Patsy), Hal (Jann), Jane (Laurence Reiser), Jon (Dawn), and Tim (Amy) and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday, July 1, 2011, at Federal Heights Ward, 1300 Fairfax Road, Salt Lake City, Utah, at 12:00 noon. Friends may visit earlier at the ward beginning at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery under the direction of Larkin Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations are welcomed. My prayers and thoughts are with the beautiful Goates family at this difficult time! I have many fond memories of times spent with Drew and his family at dinners in his home and outings with the entire family. Drew was a kind and gracious man…a true Child of God and loving soul.
May he be free of his earthly struggles and find comfort in the arms of his beautiful mother, Helen, and his 2 children that passed on before him. My love and compassion go out to the entire Goates family who I have loved since childhood…how lucky Drew was to have a family such as yours! My Our Saviors peace be with you at this time! With love especially to L. Brent~ an amazing father and patriarch! Susan

I am heartbroken and continue to send my heartfelt sympathy to the family and all those who loved and knew Drew. He was one of a kind and I will never stop missing him till I see him again. The service was so beautiful and I know that Drew would have loved it. He so loved his family. I loved him so much, and can't believe he wont be there if I call or text, and that I will no longer receive random, cute and loving texts or calls from him anymore. The hole left in my heart is enormous. He was always there for me and I knew, no matter what was going on for either of us,he would get back to me with love and concern, and of course he always had something humerous to say as well. He could always make me smile, he could always make me feel better, and he never failed to make me feel loved! Dispite the differences we had at one time, he was one of my best friends. You were in my life for a short time, but will be in my heart forever! I love you Drew! Till we meet again! XOXO PTSM 5-ever!

His wit, friendliness, talents, and love for his friends will always bring great reflections. We will remember the many good things he contributed to our lives and mortal experience. Sincere love and wishes to his family and friends at his passing.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family of Drew. He was a hard hitter that couldn't be contained in a body that was smaller than many on the East Football Team. He had a strong heart and a firm handshake. He will be remembered fondly.

We were so sorry to hear of Drew's passing. We loved being part of your family for the years we lived acoss the street. Katie and Chris and family,

My heart is broken and my thoughts are with your family. Drew was a very special man that stole my heart when I didn't know if I would ever be able to love again. I loved to listen to him talk about you kids and what you were doing. He used to drive me around your old homes and tell me such great stories about all of you. He loved you so much! I pray that he is finally free from the constant pain that he never complained about, but I could tell he was in. If I can do anything to help, please know that I am here at any time.

The world is a better place because Drew was in it. He filled every room he entered with love and laughter. Rest well, Drew. We love you.

Drew
I was just thinking of you the other day and was going to call to get some information on your Grandfather Lee. Sorry I did not make the call. Sorry too for not staying in touch over the years. You were a true friend all those years in high school and at the U. Your life was a difficult one - I feel bad that I did not take enough time to try to help you through it. Be at peace now old pal.
