Ralph Thomson Obituary

Ralph John Thomson
1937 ~ 2011
A bright light flickered out this Christmas season. At 12:56 a.m. December 23, 2011, Ralph John Thomson ended his long bout with liver disease, as his wife and family held a tender vigil at his bedside. His liver was weak, his heart strong and vibrant.
Born August 15, 1937 to Ralph Daniel Thomson and Ruth Watts Thomson, Ralph was reared in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent most of his childhood in Salt Lake City's Harvard-Yale neighborhood and the mountains of Kanosh, Utah, with a cameo in L.A.
Ralph attended East High School and the University of Utah, where he served in student government and as a diplomat at the National Student Association. After serving an LDS mission in West Germany and marrying his "sunshine girl" Julienne Allen, Ralph earned two master's degrees and a PhD in international affairs and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (Tufts and Harvard Universities; dissertation advisor, Henry Kissinger). He was deeply involved in the Civil Rights movement at home and abroad.
In academe, Ralph directed Boston University's Overseas Graduate Programs in Europe and taught at Heidelberg University, the Free Universities of Berlin and Brussels. In politics, he was a policy adviser to the Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush Administrations, and to NATO, the UN Development Program, the World Bank/IFC and the U.S. National Governors Association. Most recently, he served on the Obama Administration's White House National Export Initiative.
During a decade with then-Control Data Corporation (CDC), Ralph served as VP for Government and Public Affairs and as special assistant to his mentor, CDC's pioneering founder and chairman/CEO, William Norris.
As SVP for the American Electronics Association, he established the first U.S. electronics industry representation offices in Brussels, Tokyo and Beijing in cooperation with Commerce Department Secretary Malcolm Baldridge.
Ralph organized the first industry-wide U.S. Electronics Summits and pioneered bilateral political/industry summits between U.S., Chinese, European and Japanese technology and government leaders. His entre' into China was facilitated by sponsors Jiang Zemin (then President of the PRC) and Electronics Minister Li Tie Ying, with whom he launched the initial U.S.-PRC "Electronics Bridge."
Ralph served on many industry, investment and academic boards, including: the California World Trade Commission; the National Advisory Councils of the University of Utah, Utah State University and Utah Valley University; the Utah Technology Alliance under two Governors (co-chair); the U.S. National Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC), comprised of business/government leaders from 20 Pacific Rim nations (organizer/host); and the U.S. Advisory Committee on Telecommunications for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (chair).
In 2007, Ralph accepted the Award for Corporate Excellence from Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and the U.S. Department of State for his leadership in African economic and social development.
From 1988 until his passing, he served as chairman/CEO of International Business Catalysts, a global firm devoted to funding, M&A and strategic alliances.
Despite his many accomplishments, Ralph never lost his genuine interest in virtually everyone he met, and near the end of his life he reflected, "My crowning glories and joys are my five fine offspring and their spouses, my 17 grandchildren and 50 years together with my beloved Julienne, and serving the Lord wherever and whatever I was called upon to do."
Ralph is survived by his wife; their children Brook (Jenny), Kimball (Joei), Heidi (Mike Marshall), Tracy (Kevin Kiernan) and Preston (Hollie); 17 adoring grandchildren; his sister Kristin (Grant Paulsen); and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Susan (Steve Walker).
Funeral services will be held Friday, December 30, 2011 at Noon at the Salt Lake Ensign Stake Center, 135 A Street, Salt Lake City. Viewings will be held Thursday, December 29, 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South and at Ensign Stake Center Friday, 10:30-11:40. Interment will be at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive.
In lieu of flowers please send donations to U of U liver transplant clinic.
Special thanks to Dr. Terry Box, Janet Woodruff and the team at the University of Utah Transplant Clinic, and to Charlee Piner and her hospice team.

Ralph was a good man, always jovial each time he came to Cameroon as part of his trips to set up an urban transportation system where he was Board Chairperson. i remember him going from office to office greeting everyone with the usual smile. Adieu Ralph

May 23, 2012

Dear Julie, I only recently learned of Ralph's passing when I read a publication of the University of Utah.
I was surprised and saddened. In my early days at the "U," he was such a great friend and for me a "big brother" when I joined Sigma Chi. He remained a good friend for more than a half century, as you will recall our evening together at a restaurant in Salt Lake City. I will miss him. I send you and your family every good wish from my home in the Philippines where I teach law. Sincerely yours, John Boyd

Dear brother Ralph...or as I have called you over the years...dear R.J. or dear Ralphie - I think of you daily and miss you very much. I love you and I am blessed to have had such a terrific big brother and friend in my life for so many years. I'll see you later.

Dear Julie- I just today (Jan 10) read Ralph's inspiring obituary, and a few days before learned of his passing. Please know of my admiration and respect for both of you. I know I speak for Nance also. In spite of all his world wide involvements and accomplishments, he never mentioned them unless asked, and he always made us feel that we were special to him. What a gift. Our love to you and your family.

I echo the words of our classmate at East Hi, Yvonne Romney: He was such a jovial, friendly, brilliant person. I remember him very fondly and am deeply saddened to hear of his death.

I had no idea of the great accomplishments and distinguished career of Ralph. But I am not at all surprised.

Condolences to Julie and all Ralph's family.

Dear Julie and family: At this sad time, I hope these words will be of some comfort:

Ralph was my dear friend, mentor, partner, and inspiration. During eight years, we shared many wonderful experiences ranging from trips to California to numerous breakfasts at our favorite morning restaurant, Lambs Grill.

Ralph had the astonishing ability to effortlessly connect with people from all walks of life, at any social level. Within a few minutes of conversation, people would feel his warmth and genuine kindness. In my observation, all of those fortunate ones who knew him loved him. He was one of the best examples of Christian love I've ever known.

He's passed from us physically, but he lives forever in our hearts. I believe one day when we pass through the veil to the other side, he'll be one of the first to greet us with his big smile, warm hug, and welcoming “hello friend”. I know he's already busy connecting with old friends who passed before and making new friends. His impact upon our lives will last forever, and we were so blessed to know and experience life with him.

Julie, our love now goes out to you. You are with us in heart and spirit, always.

Dear Julie and Family,

Lovingly, we express our sympathy at this tender time. Ralph's enthusiasm permeated every encounter. His love of life and respectful nature were a highlight of our association.

Julie, and the wonderful Allen family, you have always been present to offer sound support, and enduring friendship for our lifelong adventure. We return to you that same love at this time.

May the Lord Bless You and Keep You, and Lift His Countenance Upon You, and Give You Peace!

In my last e-mail to Ralph of September 19 2011,I wrote : " After all those years of not meeting you in person, I do remember you vividly and will do so for ever. I am thankfully thinking of the contacts we had in the past, both in the Netherlands and in the US. I was happy to visit together with Nelleke your house in Minneapolis, to attend the marriage party for your oldest son in Palo Alto and my visit some years ago to your house in Salt Lake City, at the end of my trip through the US. I do remember your ever present warm hospitality, your personal care of me and your strong optimism. You impressed me also by your devoted adherence to the Mormon belief. I also remember vividly that evening in Minnesota (when Nelleke and I visited you ) that you and and I were frequently laughing, so audibly and very loudly that your Minnesota dog even started to bark (which you told me he never did before). There were people who said you and I could be brothers - I could not agree more. I regret that I never followed up that last visit to Salt Lake City.".
I will never forget you and the warm and lively contacts we had. My condoleances to Julie, your wide circle of children and grandchildren..

Dear Thomson's,

When you lived in Minnesota during the late 1970's, I was a teenage friend of Brook and Kim. I loved coming over to your home, as it was so inviting, warm and peaceful. Your Dad was so accepting and encouraging to me. Thanks for showing me the way, Brother Thomson!

Dear Julie
Mike and I extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family in your grief at Ralph's death. I am thinking back to the cross-country ride I shared with you and Ralph from Cambridge to SLC (was it 1961?) and to mutual experiences in Cambridge Ward. I had known Ralph, of course, from babyhood. We were, in fact, born on exactly the same day and grew up near one another. He was such a jovial, friendly, brilliant person. I remember him very fondly and am deeply saddened to hear of his death. Our hearts go out to you. With love, Yvonne (Romney) Dixon

Aunt Julie and Family,

We knew Ralph was accomplished, but did not know the full extent of his achievements. What a marvelous testament to his humility. What an amazing gift he had (and shared always) of making us feel so special whenever we were around him... a gift I know he shared with everyone he came in contact with. He was always shining the spotlight on others, when he could have so easily kept it for himself.

We love you guys so much and want to convey our deepest sympathies regarding your loss. Ralph is, and will continue to be, sorely missed. May God continue to bless and keep you always.

Love,

Brant, Kerrin, Madison, Max, Lewis, and Will

Julie:

Bob Brinton kept me somewhat informed about the progression of Ralph's illness. When I saw the obituary I thought back almost fifty years to the summer I took Intensive French with Ralph from Donald Barton, and then to the years we spent together in Cambridge. My first Sunday he took me with him to pick you up between Priesthood Meeting and Sunday School. We shared some good times. Coming at this time of the year his passing is a jolt, but I'm convinced that there is great comfort that his suffering is over. Fondest condolences to you and your family.
