Karen Deschamps Obituary

Karen Ann Deschamps Address Correction Karen Ann Deschamps was called home to her Father in Heaven, Tuesday May 13, 2008 in Kirtland, Ohio from injuries sustained in a car accident while serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was born July 20, 1947 in Palo Alto, California to Sarah Edna and the late Wallace Ralph Thompson. She was raised and lived in San Jose, California until she graduated from Leigh High School. She then attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. It was there she met her sweetheart and companion Randall Deschamps. They were sealed for time and eternity in the St. George, LDS Temple on May 31, 1969. They lived a short time in Lawton, Oklahoma where Karen taught elementary school while Randy was finishing his obligations to the United States Army after graduating from BYU. They then returned to Provo where she taught 2nd grade at Grandview Elementary School. With the arrival of their first child, she became a full-time mother. She considered her role as mother and grandmother to be her greatest joy in life. She was highly involved in both church and community duties and activities, where she was able to share her wonderful musical talents, and her love of life and serving others. Her love of her family and music was only surpassed by her love of the gospel and her Savior, Jesus Christ. Our parents' current mission service in Kirtland, Ohio, has been one of the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences of their lives. For the last seven months, Mom and Dad have enjoyed their happiest times, enjoying one another and serving the Lord together. She is survived by her eternal companion and best friend, Randall Deschamps of St. George, Utah; her mother, Edna Thompson of Orem, Utah; her sister, Connie Johnson of Provo, Utah; and her four children: Denise Urish (Mark) of Las Vegas, Nevada; Marie Norwood (Wesley) of Las Vegas, Nevada; David Randall Deschamps (Jennifer) of Little Rock, Arkansas; Melinda Deschamps of St. George, Utah; and her true joys in life, her beloved grandchildren: Tyler and Mason Urish, Chandler and Chase Norwood, Olivet and Eleanor Deschamps. She was preceded in death by her father, Wallace Ralph Thompson, and her brother-in-law, Gerald Johnson. A viewing will be held in St. George, Utah for all family and friends on May 22, 2008, at the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., from 6-9 p.m. A viewing will also be held in Provo, Utah at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., on May 23, 2008 from 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Hillcrest LDS Chapel, 1035 S. 800 E., Orem, Utah, on May 24, 2008 beginning with a viewing from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The memorial service will follow at 12 p.m. Interment will be at the East Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Provo, Utah. Mom, we love you, we miss you, and we will take care of Dad he will never be without a freshly ironed shirt! Our family would like to thank so many who have prayed for, and supported our parents and all of us: The Kirtland, Ohio missionaries and church members, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the doctors and nurses at Metrohealth Medical Center, and dear friends and family from all over the world. Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, St. George, UT 435-673-2454.

Randy and all the family - We mourn with you Karen's passing and pray for Randy's recovery in the Lord's time. We knew Randy & Karen from BYU days, and in their Orem years they lived across the street from Terry Olson's mom (Peggy Hanna). They were always great neighbors, ward members and friends. But you know all that. We ask the spirit to continue to sustain and comfort you. We assume the grandchildren will be told many stories about the faith and fun Karen spread to all. All our love.

Dear Randy and all the family.
We send you our heartfelt love and sympathy. Our prayers are with you in your loss, and also for Randy´s recovery.
It is only a few months since I spoke with Karen about the joys of a mission. My husband and I are currently serving as mission president couple in Stockholm, Sweden, and we were thrilled to learn that Karen and Randy were serving in Kirtland. Karen and I became friends while at BYU together, and even after I went back to Norway, we have stayed in touch over the years. You David, and my Tobias were only 10 days apart, and Karen and I would compare notes on our pregnancies from two opposite parts of the world. A special greeting to Connie and to mother Thompson if she remembers me.
I love Karen and I am so grateful for our friendship through the years. It will never end.
Our warmest greetings,
Jan Åke and Bente

We were so saddened to hear the news about your mother and dad. Your mom was so kind to our little family when we first moved into their ward in Orem. Karen was so generous and would share her daughters mini world dresses with my girls. I will never forget her love and kindness. We are praying for your dad.

We were so shocked and saddened to hear of the accident and that Karen had passed away. What a wonderful person she is!
I worked with her in a primary presidency years ago and learned so much from her kind and giving example. She is truly a Christ- like person.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family at this most difficult time.

Our family is heartbroken over this accident. We were in Kirtland just the Saturday before the accident and the Deschamps were "our missionaries". As we spent those 2 hours with them, there was a very special bond created. As I read these comments, I feel that many were blessed by this same bond. We had our 18 month old grandson with us who was "very busy" to put it gently. The Deschamps were wonderful with him and our daughter/son-in-law, and enabled all of us to have a very spiritual experience. We laughed and shared stories about our grandkids and were looking so forward to seeing them soon in a June visit. Karen was very excited to see a new grandbaby for the first time! They radiated a spirit of love and friendship; we are so grateful for the time we spent with them. Karen bore such a strong testimony of Joseph Smith and the Savior as we sat in the room where the School of the Prophets was held. The Spirit felt at this time was the highpoint of our visit in Kirtland. Truly she was a valiant soul. To the family, I would just like to express our deepest sorrow and are praying for Randy's speedy recovery. If they would read the words to the song "Each Life that Touches Ours For Good" then this would express our deepest feelings for this wonderful couple. We live in Highland, Utah if anyone could keep us updated on Randy.

To the entire Deschamps family, I know some of you better than others but I know your Dad well, we have traveled hundreds of miles back and forth to St. George I have spent hundeds of hours talking with Randy. What a great Guy. I would like to say Your Mom was so cool even when the neighbors called and said a vagrent was on the front yard grass and she simply said no that is just Rick waiting for Randy to get home. Karen was always so nice she only thought of others because she loved herself and wanted to share her love. I am glad to have known her. I want you all to know that I love you. I love your Dad and I Love your Mom.

I was very sad to hear about Mrs. Deschamps. She was my 2nd grade teacher at Grandview Elementary. That was a long time ago, but she is one teacher I never forgot. I don't remember specific lessons, but I knew she loved me and I loved her.

Dear Family,
Our first contact with your family was with Tom Johnson who came to South Africa on his mission. Our daughter Kim came to Byu from South Africa and was here on her own far from family ,Tom contacted his mother and in no time Connie Johnson and her girls took her under their wings and cared for her.One only has to be in the presence of sister Edna Thompson once to realize where her daughters got their kind and charitable hearts from.I later met Karen and her husband when we moved to Utah and immediately thought ' what lovely people'.
Please know that our lives have been touched by your family,we truly feel your loss and know that this is such a hard time to have to endure.Of course we know where your mother, wife, daughter, sister and Aunt is at this time but the loss is what is so hard to bare. All I can say is cry as often as you wish, talk and talk and talk , and eventually the sun will begin to shine again although it will never have as many rays as before.
Our hearts are heavy,we love and care for all of you and are so sorry for your loss.

With lots of love from,

Dear Family

On April 7, 2008, we had the opportunity of visiting Kirtland, Ohio. Your Mother and Dad were assigned to show us around. We were delighted to make their aquaintance, we had so much in common and knew so many of the same people. We took pictures of them and spent the entire morning with them and they were delightful. My husband and I had served as Mission President in San Jose California and I can tell you that they were awesome missionaries. We know how hard this must be and we were so sorry when we heard the news. May the Lord be with your family and your Dad at this hard time in life. Families are Forever!

The Randy Deschamps Family:
As I was viewing the death notices in Sundays paper I read the name Deschamps. It is not a common name so it caught my attention.
If this is the Randy Deschamps who spent his teenage years in Reseda, Calif. then this is for you and your family. If not I'm sorry for intruding. I was so sorry to hear about your loss. I never met you wife and mother, but reading about her made it easy to tell she is a wonderful person. My thought and prayers are will be with you and your family. Best luck my old teenage friend

My wife and I had the pleasure of having your parents as tour guides at Kirtland on Sunday May 4 for the second half of our time there in the "village." Your mother was lovingly attentive to us and would add timely comments each time your dad finished his remarks at a different venue. Your mom told us how excited she was to soon hold a young grandchild who was coming to Kirtland in the coming weeks.
My wife is a descedant of Isaac Morley. It was fun to hear about your parents enthusiasm for him.
Your mother is a person my wife and I will never forget especially since we had such a fun time together during the last ten days of her life.
We were so surprised to hear of her passing.
Sincere best and warm wishes to you during these tender times.

I send my sympathy to the family and friends of Sister Karen Deschamps. On one hand what a shock and tragedy. On the other she has moved on to another mission and was worthy to do so.
God bless you all.

Dear Deschamps Family & Edna,
This is such a shock but with my belief in the gospel that we will all see each other again it is lessened. I'm sure Karen and her father are having quite a reunion.
Karen and Connie were babysitters for my 3 children in California. Ralph and Edna dear friends of mine. Our prayers are with your family at this time.

Our whole family was so saddened to hear of this tragic accident. Even though we live in Orem where the Deschamps lived for many years, it wasn't until our family visited Kirtland in April that we met them. From the moment we walked into the Visitors Center, we felt their genuine love for us and knew that they were special people. For several hours over two days, they shared their love for their mission and stories about Joseph Smith and Kirtland with us. Their deep conviction of the importance Kirtland played in the early days of the Church really made an impact on us. We will not think of the Whitney Store or the School of the Prophets without remembering their sweet testimony that they shared with us about everything in Kirtland. Our trip means even more to us now knowing that Elder and Sis. Deschamps sacrificed so much to share their testimonies with others. What perfect examples of followers of Christ.

Your familly only touched our lives for 5 short years as we bought our first house in your neighborhood in Orem. Your daughters tended our young children, and what wonderful daughters you have raised. Your example left a lasting impression on our family. We were sad and shocked as we sat and watched the sad news, as we too are now planning for a mission and my daughter and I had been talking about her own fears of this exact thing happen while we are gone. Your family has been in our prayers and on our minds for days. May God bless you and give you peace.

Denise and Mark, Marie, David and Mindy...I just wanted to write and express my love to each of you and tell you how sad I have felt about this whole tragic accident. Your mom was so great. Never seen without a smile and she always had a genuine interest in everyone around her. It was easy to be at your house. Your parents made it so comfortable. My family and I pray for the successful recovery of your dad. He is one of my favorite people and a great example to me of a how a father, husband and neighbor should be. I can't wait to see him again and hear some funny stories. God bless and we will see you all soon. With love, Wade Griffiths and Family

Our thoughts and prayers will be with you. Karen and Randy are among the dearest friends I have ever had starting as neighbors from a humble apartment in Provo when we were just getting started. You have continued to be my friend and neighbor in this life ever since, reguardless of where we have lived. With you it is easy to follow the master plea to "Love your neighbor as yourself".
I love you all and share my deapest sympathies.
