Truman Madsen Obituary

Truman Grant Madsen 12/13/1926 ~ 5/28/2009 "Oh, Joseph!"* (*Truman's tearful exclamation upon hearing the announcement about the rebuilding of the Nauvoo Temple.) Truman Grant Madsen died at home on 28 May 2009 at the age of 82 in Provo, Utah after a courageous year-long battle with cancer. He faced that year with grace and good humor. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was also a distinguished scholar, speaker, and author. Truman was born 13 December 1926 to Axel A. and Emily Grant Madsen, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the second of three sons. He graduated from East High School, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Utah, and his Ph.D from Harvard University. He served as an LDS missionary in the New England Mission, and he and his cherished wife Ann Nicholls were married in the Salt Lake Temple on 16 June 1953. His family and the Gospel were his two greatest joys. Truman was an honored teacher, retiring as an emeritus professor of philosophy and religion after 37 years at BYU, a professor and honors professor of the year, and a recipient of the Karl G. Maeser award. He also taught at Claremont College and Graduate Theological Union in California, at Northeastern University in Boston, and at Haifa University in Israel, and served as the director of the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. One of his greatest legacies was helping "millions (to) know Brother Joseph again" through two well-known and highly acclaimed lecture series and through various other lectures, books, articles, and DVDs. What he wrote of B.H. Roberts, could well be said of him: "All of a sudden he looked up and raised his hands up and said, 'Brother Joseph, I have fought for you, I have defended you. I have loved you . . .'." Defender of the Faith, p. 388. Truman had the unique gift to speak fluently both the language of faith and the language of scholarship, and to build bridges between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and scholars of other faiths. As the first occupant of the Richard L. Evans Chair of Religious Understanding and as Director of BYU's Religious Studies Center, he hosted symposia and edited and published comparative papers by well-known scholars in compilations including Reflections on Mormonism: Judaeo-Christian Parallels. A prolific author, his published volumes include Eternal Man, Christ and the Inner Life, Four Essays on Love, Defender of the Faith: the B.H. Roberts Story, Joseph Smith the Prophet, The Highest in Us, The Radiant Life, The Presidents of the Church: Insights Into Their Lives and Teachings, The Temple: Where Heaven Meets Earth, and The Sacrament: Feasting at the Lord's Table. His audio and video works include Joseph Smith the Prophet, Jesus of Nazareth, On Sacred Ground: Reflections on Joseph Smith, and the forthcoming The Eternal Christ. He has inspired a generation of LDS scholars, and touched countless lives throughout the world. He was a devout member and a lifelong advocate of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving faithfully in many callings including as a bishop, president of the New England Mission, counselor in the Israel District presidency, stake president, Gospel Doctrine instructor, and most recently as a stake patriarch. Perhaps less well known, he was a master at Frisbee, an avid lifelong BYU football fan, and made the best scrambled eggs, popcorn, and lemon ice cream on the planet. He was a hopeless romantic and loved Rachmaninoff, Gershwin, and Grieg as well as Cyrano de Bergerac, "Random Harvest", and "An Affair To Remember." He loved relaxing at the cabin the family built at Brighton, eating at Cardullo's deli in Harvard Square, and walking the shores of the Sea of Galilee. He owned every recording jazz band leader Stan Kenton ever made and his youngest daughter's first sentence was, "Turn it down!" He is survived by his devoted wife, Ann Nicholls, and their three children: daughters Emily Reynolds (Mark), Mindy Davis (the late Grant Davis), and son Barnard (Cindy); a Navajo foster son, Larry Watchman; nine grandsons, and five grand-daughters; two great-grandsons and 10 great-granddaughters. He would wish to thank all those who provided loving, devoted, and extraordinary care during his illness. Friends may call at the Sharon East Stake Center, 2400 N. 1060 E., Provo, Utah from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on 1 June 2009. A memorial service will be held 2 June 2009 in the Provo LDS Tabernacle, 90 S. University Avenue, in Provo, Utah beginning at noon. A podcast of the service will be available at www.thefuneralview.com. Interment will follow at the Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 N Street, Salt Lake City, Utah. Sundberg Olpin Mortunary is handling final arrangements. Friends may leave condolences at www.sundbergolpinmortuary.com Those who desire may make a donation to the Perpetual Education Fund in his memory.

Truman Madsen, was a special spirit, with an eloquent smooth, spiritual was of speaking. He was brilliant with the gospel and church history. I loved the tapes he did on the life of Joseph Smith Jr and the life of Jesus Christ.

Truman was a wonderful, extremely intelligent person. He did a lot of good for the church in terms of the history of our prophet, Joseph Smith. Thank you Truman! We love you!

When living in California almost 40 years ago was the first time I heard Brother Madsen speak. I don't remember everything he spoke about, but I do remember the spirit in which he spoke and the Holy Ghost encircling me with a confirmation of what he said was true. I had the opportunity again of hearing him years later at Education Week at the Y - he could have talked many more hours and my attention would have been in awe of his understanding about the Prophet Joseph. How grateful I am that I was blessed to hear his testimony and feel his love for the Savior.
Those on the other side will now be blessed by hearing his testimony and witness of Christ.

I would be remiss if I did not include my name with those of the bereaved. With the burning of the chapel in Longfellow Park in Cambridge, MA only a few weeks ago, thoughts have swelled once again with fond memories of so very much. "How beautiful are they to the eyes of them who there came to a knowledge of their Redeemer."

Dear Madsen Family,
Love your father. He and G. E. Smith and Ellis Craig used to have long discussion about history of the church sitting around the dinner table of the Craig home in Calif. This was a common occurance. I was a young eager to learn guest of Jan and Ellis living in their guest home. This was in the late 60's and early 70's. Changed my life and unterstanding of a 20 year old girl from Scipio. I will be forever indebted to being touched by your father's love of all things sacred. That level of understanding became the baseline for me...little did I know I had been so schooled & changed for the better. The words echo still. JoAnn Memmott Frost

Dear Madsen Family,
I've been slow to express my condolences because words cannot convey what Truman taught me as I listened to his inspired enthusiastic words while he described grandpa Grant, eternal love, or a gospel principle.
He was a remarkable teacher and scholar which the obituary captured, but he was equally kind, human, and encouraging.
I feel deep gratitude that I learned from such a visionary, loving man. And I feel deep gratitude that you generously shared him with others.
Love, Rebecca Willis Boren

Dear Sister Madsen - What a tremendouse loss it is for you and your family, but also all of us who admired Brother Madsen. The Church, the university, the community and the world will miss him greatly. Just think of the joy there was as he embraced the Savior, the prophets and his family. I'm grateful that you were such great spiritual mentors to Steve, thus enabling me to get to know you.

May the Lord continue to fill your heart and soul with His love and peace. I look forward to your continuing the Madsen legacy as you write articles and books and share your wisdom and testimony throughout The Church and the world. You are both choice people and I know he will be watching over you until you're together again.

One could not have lived in the Ensign Ward during the 40's and 50's without appreciating the truly outstanding qualities of Truman, especially in teaching. He and my brother Kay were good friends. My father (Geo. Cannon Young) was his Bishop for awile and know his great love for Truman. The separation will be for a moment and then he will be restored ot his full glory. God bless the family!

Dear Ann and Family,

I wanted to drop you this note to tell you what a wonderful man Truman is and what a large impact he has had on my life. I took Book of Mormon from him my freshman year at BYU and I remember him encouraging me through memorization and speaking fears. I had wonderful experiences with he and Ann in Israel on a semester abroad, 1987. I remember his sermon on "Light" as possibly the most powerful talk I have ever heard. At the end of the sermon there was complete silence and the student's jaws seemed to be on the floor and no one knew what to say. Speaking seemed inappropriate. I have listened to his tapes on Joseph Smith more than once and they have helped me gain a love for Joseph Smith in such a meaningful way. Truman's cherry disposition, positive outlook, spiritual depth, humor, and inspiration will continue to point me heaven word like few others have in my life.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of mourning.

Dear Ann and Family,

We are all so sad to learn of Truman's death, but are happy that his physical suffering is over at a last. I will always treasure the time we were able to spend with you on your last visit to the Galilee. My two most vivid memories of that last visit I think reflect the nature of Truman's life: having him stand as a patriarch during the solemn assembly, and then giving me advice on how to fix my noisy car door! I am so glad I got to have one more hug from him. We will be planting a tree in his name here in the Galilee.

Our hearts are with you.

Our thoughts are with you as you remember the love and care of your great husband and father. Truman inspired us in so many ways, not the least of which was to continue on the tradition of the Grant birthday. As he always saluted us, "blessings."

I served as stake music chair under President Madsen just after I had graduated from BYU. It was wonderful to be around him and learn from him. He lifted me up at a time when I was in transition and really struggling to find out where I needed to be.

He would call me queen and once, before a stake conference when the stake leadership was about to say a prayer together, he noticed me and told everyone that I was the flower among the thorns. He gave me my first temple recommend, and later, when I told him that I was moving to Salt Lake he said, "How are we ever going to fill your shoes?" I knew very well that there were many people more qualified than I was to do that calling. That validation and appreciated for the work I had done meant the world to me.

My memories of President Madsen are some of the sweetest that I have. I appreciated his devotion to the gospel and the love he had for all of us in the stake. I consider it an absolute privilege to have known him.

May Heavenly Father bless your family with peace at this time of temporary parting.

I am a avid collector of all things that Brother Truman was involved in. Of most importance was his DVD series "On Sacred Ground". Brother Truman brought insights into the life and character of Brother Joseph by amazing means. That DVD series brightens our testimonies of the Prophet Joseph and for that, thank you very much.

I believe Brother Truman will be well received.

Dear Ann and family,
Like so many others, I have fond memories of your dear Truman. I always felt like we "took up where we left off" after not seeing him for long periods of time.
On one such occasion, I was in SLC for June Conference and had done a temple session. A group of former Cambridgeites met that evening and his first words to me were, "You've been to the temple, haven't you. You still have the glow!" What a sweet observation.
I love watching the presentations on BYU-TV when he is among the scholars adding to my knowledge of the Gospel. And that includes you, as well.
My very deep love and condolences to you and yours.... I know there is joy in Heaven right about now, especially for his mother.

May 30, 2009

Dear Family and Friends of Truman G. Madsen,

Forty-one years ago I was a sixteen-year old, one of the few among my peers to have a driver's license. I was just beginning to gain a testimony. One evening some of my friends who had decided to skip out on mutual persuaded me to drive them to a class taught by Truman G. Madsen at the University of Utah Institute of Religion.

To say that I was impressed by Truman G. Madsen's class would be an understatement. My interest in the Gospel immediately sky-rocketed! I and many of my inactive teenage friends owe him a debt of gratitude for bringing the Gospel of fire and light to us.

Ever since then, I've taken advantage of every opportunity available to read, listen to, or watch Brother Madsen. Now my children (some with young children of their own) have learned to savor Brother Madsen's writings and oral presentations, too.

President Heber J. Grant was saddened to not have a son grow to maturity carrying the Grant name. Oh, but if President Grant had then known about his grandson Truman G. Madsen, he would have undoubtedly been consoled.

Brother Madsen's singular abilities have greatly benefited a great number of people all over the world. Brother Madsen now gets to sit down, per Helaman 3:29, 30 with the great prophets and others of times past who he has so zealously represented.

Dear Ann & family,

I first met your husband and father as a student at BYU in the 1960's. I will never forget being able to knock on the door of his office and being invited in, spending few minutes and receiving inspiring answers to my questions. His devotional "The Commanding Image of Christ" has rung in my ears throughout the decades, inspiring me during difficult times and grounding me in better times. I feel a loss but am yet motivated still to be a little better because of the many messages he has provided throughout the years. Thanks for sharing him and his thoughts with me.

Dear Madsen Family,
My husband was going through chemo the same time as Brother Madsen. I wanted to come over and tell him how he influenced my brother when he was at BYU, but didn't want to intrude. He will always be President Madsen to me. Having the privilege of serving with the Madsens in New England was a great honor. He taught us to love the Savior and honor the life of the Prophet Joseph.

Those of us who were blessed to call him President, will never forget the days we sat at his feet and were feed by his spirit. Thank you, President, for what you taught us all.

Dear Madsen family. I will always remember spending a couple of hours in the back seat of a car with Truman up on Capital Hill in SLC when I was about 15 or 16,about 65 years ago, & he taught me the importance of the Savior & the Gospel in our lives & it has made a lasting impression on my life. I have followed him throughout the years and consider him one of if not the greatest Gospel Teacher that ever lived. Our Prayers are with you.

Ann, Emily, Barney and Mindy, What a blessing you all have been in my life. From the Mission Home in Cambridge to the countless hours spent at the feet of the most spiritually attuned Man I have ever met I express my deepest love and condolences. His legacy will continue for the eternities as we who were schooled and ministered by him try in our own ways to apply the lessons and continue on in our mortal experience. Blessings on you all. We love you and thank you for sharing your husband and father and exemplar with all of us. Can you imagine the greeting he received as he made the transition. You are the best.

To the many words of praise and the outpouring that will follow, I add profound and very personal sentiments of love and respect for this great man. The extent of his influence on my life, and the lives of my family members, is immeasurable and untold. He looked out on the broad expanse of eternity, contemplated it, wrestled with it, and distilled it with great care and clarity for the benefit of those who followed him. But, understanding the value of the inner struggle, he taught us to be patient with and undaunted by the curiosities and the complexities of life. Ever his friend and advocate, I place myself squarely alongside the many who will stand as witnesses for him at the last day.

My wife, Diane, and I send our deepest condolences. Brother Madsen was an inspiration to us, through his articles, books and recordings. His recordings of "Every Member a Birddogger" and "The Highest In Us", as well as his Joseph Smith lectures, made a wonderful difference in our lives. God bless Brother Truman for the goodness of his life!

May 30, 2009

I was sorry to read of Brother Madsen's passing. I will always remember a conversation I had with him in 1988 in the Jerusalem Center's library concerning polygamy. Perhaps even more impactful was a (Sunday School?) lesson given by Sister Madsen on the 1 lost sheep vs the 99. Thank you for all both of you have given to many of us through out the world.

Holly Metcalf

May 30, 2009

Dear Madsen Family,
I mourn the loss of one of the noble and great ones--Truman Madsen. His work, his voice, his testimony have moved me for decades and I wouldn't have the same testimony were it not for him.

Decades ago, in the 60s, Truman and Ann had a huge impact on my mother's spirituality. She had the privilege of traveling the New England Mission with them and the 3 Ds. The hours of conversations with the Madsens opened up vistas and depths of spirituality she had only vaguely dreamed of before that. Once imprinted, she was able to influence generations in her family and a few others along the way.

You may not be able to imagine how many there are who are indebted to you for sharing your father with the saints and the world. He was--and through his legacy will continue to be--a bright and a shining light.

What a reunion he is having with those in the Spirit World, to whom he is no stranger.

Sincerely, Holly Cannon Metcalf

Madsen Family,

I only met Pres Madsen once in the early 70's.

He came to Wisconsin to speak to a group of young adults.

He gave the most powerful testimony of Joseph Smith I have ever heard and still remember his talk vividly.

It helped me strenghen my testimony of Joseph Smith as I was becoming active in the church.

Thank you for sharing him with others so he could complete such a great lifes work.

Dear Madsen Family,

President Madsen was our Stake President years ago, but his impact on our life still remains ever present. What an incredible man! He had such patience and love and wisdom. We will always cherish knowing him and all the things he taught us. We feel a deep sadness because of his loss. May peace be yours at this difficult time.

May 29, 2009

Dear Ann and Family,
Please accept our love and sympathy at this difficult time in your lives. Truman Madsen was a great example of a life well lived. We have read and listened to many of his creative efforts and appreciate him as a scholar. More than that we have shared our love of Brighton and enjoyed our association at the Brighton Branch of the LDS Church. We are writing this from Accra, Ghana where we are serving our fifth mission. May the Lord bless you with peace and comfort. With Love, John and Pat Bevan

I send up heartfelt prayers of gratitude that ever I knew of Brother Madsen. I was an institute student in the 70s while working with the new New Era, and it was wonderful to soak in his teachings and spirit. I have since read and listened to everything from him that I could, as have my siblings and my son. May you have great comfort as you cherish every memory you have of him, as do I.

May 29, 2009

Truman G. Madsen was instrumental in introducing me to The Prophet Joseph through his books and talks on tape. I didn't know Brother Madsen, however he was our stake patriarch when my wife and I lived in Provo. Your testimony will forever live on as it is a part of me and I have shared it with thousands and they have shared it and so on and so on.

Dear Ann,
I was sad to hear that Truman Madsen was no longer with us as I have been a big fan of his writings and explorations. I have always been grateful that many years ago, before your marriage, you were my MIA Maid teacher. I will never forget the story you shared with us about an article you read in The Era written by a returned missionary, about his dream girl. Later, you met Truman and discovered he had written the article. I still have the typewritten copy from you, and will never forget that story. I have learned much from the both of you and truly thank you, as well as send my great sympathy.

May 29, 2009

I never have met Brother Madsen, but his words surely have helped me grow my testimony stronger in the faith. I listened to his lectures Joseph Smith: The Prophet as a missionary in Ohio and gave me a better picture how Borther Joseph was as a person. He helped me better understand him as i taught those investigators. A loss for the family and the Church. What a great man

Dear Ann and the rest of the Madsen family,
I feel honored to have known Truman. I was one of those (one of very many) whose life he touched. He lifted me and helped secure my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I will forever love him.

May 29, 2009

Truman was my seminary teacher in Jr. High many years ago. It was Truman who first sparked my testimony of the gospel. I owe the first seeds of a strong testimony to this remarkable man. Thank you Truman for the influence you had on my life 60 years ago and the influence you continue to have on my life, knowledge, and testimony through your books and tapes.

In August of 1964 President Madsen picked me up at the Boston train station. I was one of the new New England missionaries. As a 19 year old kid from Idaho I had never heard of Brother Madsen. Since that time I have learned what a great teacher he was and his love of Brother Joseph. I was deeply saddened by his passing.

Dear Ann and family,
We want to express our love and sympathy to you at this time of Truman's passing. We have always loved to read and listen to his words, especially about the Prophet Joseph. You may not remember but we still treasure the time you spent in our home here in West Virginia when you both came to speak at our Stake Leadership retreat. The night we sat around our kitchen table and talked and discussed gospel questions remains a sacred memory for us. Please know that we have faith that you will be together again in a time and place devoid of any pain or suffering and joy will be there because of the lives you have lived.

To this man's family,

What a wonderful man. I so much enjoyed listening to him, and reading his books was wonderful.
I lost my husband to cancer 6 years ago, I can relate with what all of you are going through.
Thank our Heavenly Father for the Plan of Salvation.
My prayers and sympathy go out to all of his families.

To the Madson Family,
Yes, he made an impact on my life. Elder and Sister Madson were invited to our stake youth conference by Elder Madson's cousin, Rosemary Bennett Fletcher. They spent three days and two nights with us.
I will never forget how sacred the sacrament was rendered that day as a young man who was touched by the spirit of the conference could not start the sacramental prayer with shedding some emotional tears of love and kindness rendered by the example and the words of Truman and Ann Madson on that day.
I have read many of your books and I get that same spirit of love and dedication as our youth received at youth conference in the Caldwell New Jersey Stake.

Ann, my thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. My memories date back decades and special ones include the time that you and Truman brought your mother and his father to dinner at my house in the East Bay and I got to serve as escort for your mother as she made her first shopping trip to San Francisco. But earlier still were the years in New England when Truman served as missionary for "Uncle" Dil and later attended school and had his little newstand in the hall of the divinity school. I am certain that Joseph was at the gate to greet Truman as he returned "home." God bless you and yours.

We recently obtained the rest of the DVD's On Sacred Ground and have watched them all. We showed the section on the Kirtland Temple to 10 senior missionaries for family home evening last Monday. His influence in our lives has been endearing and has lifted us to higher levels. His feelings for the Savior and for His Latter-day prophet, Joseph Smith, have touched our emotions as we have witnessed Brother Madsen's testimony. How we love him and his good wife. We are so honored to be counted as friends to such noble spirits. What joy it will be to rejoin his company again someday.
