Carolyn Harmer Obituary

Carolyn Jonas Harmer
1938 ~ 2015
Our beloved Carolyn Jonas Harmer passed away on August 3, 2015. Carolyn was born March 30, 1938 in Brooklyn, New York, to her adoring parents, Claudia Cannon and Marwin Frederick Jonas. She was raised in Glendale and Burbank, California where she graduated from Burbank High School. She graduated from the University of Utah where she was elected Student Body Secretary, Senior Class Vice President, President of her sorority Delta Gamma, and President of Panhellenic. She was named to Beehive Honor Society and Mortar Board. Carolyn earned a BA in English and later earned a Masters Degree in English from Los Angeles State University. She taught high school English in Glendale, CA and Montgomery County, Maryland. She later taught US History and Civics in middle school in Salt Lake City.
Carolyn married John L. Harmer June 24, 1960 in the Los Angeles LDS Temple, and they lived in Maryland and California before moving to Bountiful, Utah. Carolyn was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and treasured her testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She served in the presidencies and as a teacher in Primary, Young Women and Relief Society Organizations. She also taught Gospel Doctrine, served as Girl's Camp director, served as a Cub Scout and Webelos leader, and was a merit badge counselor for many years. Carolyn loved music and taught piano lessons for over 30 years. She played the organ in the Bountiful temple for 19 years and served as a Ward organist for over 65 years. She also served as a docent for 12 years in the Museum of Church History and Art. She loved directing music in Primary and was a Ward Choir director in 3 different wards. Most of all, Carolyn loved hearing her children and grandchildren sing together. She devoted her life to us, and we will be forever grateful for her unconditional love and selfless service.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, John L. Harmer, her 10 remarkable [her words] children whom she loved dearly, David (Elayne Wells), Matthew (Stacy Larsen), Vivian (Mark Ellsworth), Christopher (Roshelle Davis), Elizabeth (Keith Dionne), Joseph (Christina Vistaunet), Jonathan (Lynnelle Pyper), Amy Marie (Jon Cox), Miriam Anne, Wendy Bryn (Micah McOwen) and 34 adored grandchildren, with her 35th grandchild arriving in a few weeks and her first great-grandchild due to arrive in November. Carolyn is also survived by her loving siblings, Jeffrey Cannon Jonas (Judy Hale), Marianne (Steve Eastmond), and Penelope Barth and many treasured nieces and nephews. Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved parents and a precious granddaughter, Olivia Grace Harmer.
The family wishes to thank the kind and caring staff, nurses and doctors at LDS Hospital, and the hospice aides and nurses for their support during the past 3 weeks.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 10, at the Bountiful, Utah Mueller Park Stake Center, 1800 East Mueller Park Road. Visitation will be at the Stake Center from 9:00 - 11am, with funeral proceedings to follow at 11:30am. Interment will be at the Lake View Memorial Cemetery in Bountiful.

Dear Harmer Family,

We were so sad to hear about Carolyn. We have nothing but wonderful memories of her and your family. It was a blessing to be neighbors in Roseville, CA and raise our little ones together.

We pray that all of you find peace and comfort in knowing what a sweet and talented woman Carolyn was. We feel certain that many (if not all) of you have followed in her footsteps. And we are sure her grandchildren are "remarkable!"

Please know of our love and thoughts. We are serving a mission in Kyiv right now so it is difficult to do anything but write this note. If we were still neighbors you know we would fill your table with food and flowers.

We are thankful to have known Carolyn and look forward to seeing her again someday.

With love and sympathy,

Frank and Nancy Trythall

I am so sorry to hear about Carolyn's passing. She was a great and "elect" lady whom I admired very much. I appreciate deeply the brief association we had with the Harmer family during the time when they lived at the end of J Bar B Drive in Granite Bay, California. My sincere condolences to all of her loved ones.

What a marvelous lady, a mentor for me. I looked up to her in every way. You, as her husband, John, and her children are blessed to have had her constant radiant example and guidance. Much love and sympathy, Annette Slade

Carolyn and John introduced my sister, Clare Hardy, to her future husband, Jonathan Edwin Johnson, II. We lived just a street over from the Harmers in Washington, D.C. Carolyn and John were so dear to our family and so kind to my mother, Maren Eccles Hardy. John flew me from college in Utah to sing at a Republican political rally for Ronald Reagan in California The Harmers invited me to live with them for my last year of high school, but my mother didn't feel she could part with me a year early. My sister, Alison Hardy Decker, was a sorority sister and close friend in college to Marianne Jonas, Carolyn's sister. I loved Carolyn with her beautiful smile and warm and caring personality. She was regal as she played the organ in the Chevy Chase Ward. What an exceptional wife and mother you have!

Love, Maren Hardy Hale

My deepest and sincerest condolences to the loss of such a great human being. I will always treasure the memories of going to her house to learn how to play the piano, and also to come home with a mini loaf of freshly baked bread. She has a wonderful spirit and I know it will endure.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of your mother is her smile. She was always smiling. I'm so glad you have the knowledge of eternal families. Love to all her family
