Walt Stewart was my childhood hero. He had been a missionary to Glasgow, and during the war he visited my family in Glasgow. I wore the wristwatch he gave me into my twenties while I served in the US AirForce. He once flew over my primary school and did that thing with the wings to give me bragging rights with my classmates. (we had lost 20-30% of our classmates to Nazi bombs) and now the Yanks had come.)
I had been thinking about him in recent years as I am recording our Junor family history of the war years and the move to Utah. I have shared a lot of Walt Stewart stories with my children.

I just learned of the passing of Brother Stewart. He was my first and seminary teacher. I went on the invitation of my neighbor Bob Tolman who told me that whoever brought the 30th student to class would get to choose the type of party the class would have. The class was held in the Whittier-Browning Ward Building. On the first day I attended I was given a registration card to fill out and then gave it to Brother Stewart. After reading it Brother Stewart paused in his lesson and asked me if my parents were named Bill and Dolly and when I replied, yes, he told me to tell them that Walter Stewart was my seminary teacher. I did that at dinner that night and discovered that he had been in my parents home during the time he labored in Scotland while serving in the British Mission. He was a great teacher and by the time the year was over there were probably 50 to 60 students in his class. I was grateful years later to see him receive the award he had earned for his service in WWII. I have always remembered him from those months we spent in his class.

Walt Stewart was my Scoutmaster in Highland View Ward, 1951-52. With his characteristic modesty, we learned only that he was in the war as a pilot, because the tales of his amazing exploits and heroism were told almost exclusively by others. About five years ago, (by personal telephone request), Walt sent me a signed copy of the Ploesti raid video, along with a note which I have framed; both of which are among my most cherished possessions. Somehow, I missed any news coverage (?) of his passing, but would have crawled to get to his funeral had I known. Farewell, dear patriot and friend, until we meet again.

Dad trained in B-24s in McCook Nebraska and was supposed to ship to Europe, but while he was on bedrest with a very bad cold, his plane crashed while practicing low level bombing and gunnery, killing the whole crew. They were very likely training for this raid, because the squadron shipped overseas without him, and he switched to B-29s. I saw this Col Stewart several times on local TV telling his story over the years. His story always mesmerized me: The famed Pilot of "UTAH MAN" a B-24 Heavy Bomber that flew 30+ missions over the Nazis in WWII, including the near, suicidal low-level Poleisti Raid that saw so many shot down. A Mormon that went to the U of Utah, so he named his plane that, and despite his crew being of many other persuasions, he would have crew prayer before every mission. And he always brought them back. A Good Utah Man - - RIP

I became acquainted with Walter Stewart while researching the military life of his close friend, Captain Hugh Rawlin Roper. Walt went the extra mile in providing valuable, detailed information, and he spoke highly of all the men with whom he served. Walt was a very good man and I am grateful for his input and ensuing friendship. Walt was truly a great American who contributed much to our country and brought happiness to those who knew him. I wish to extend my condolences and best wishes to all of the Stewart family.

What choice memories we have of the Stewart family, as neighbors on 27th South, and as friends. My sisters and I tended the younger Stewart children, and had much fun! Walt was the BEST Sunday School teacher for impressionable teenagers! We still remember his life-altering lessons. And, who can ever forget Ruth's lovely smile! When my husband and I married in 1965, we sent Walt and Ruth a wedding invitation even though they were serving an LDS building mission in Germany at the time. To our surprise, we received a gift especially made in Germany! How thoughtful they were! And, now they are reunited once again! We are so happy for them, and we will be forever grateful for their eternal influence upon our lives! Such a valiant couple!
Our love to the entire Stewart Clan!

Life long friends. We did Boy Scouting together in a large scout troop of over 50 scouts, we took flying trips on short vacations with our wives, we shared the gospel and the scriptures along with our war stories. Those were all good times with Walt and Ruth. What a remarkable family. We send best wishes as both he and Ruth along with some family members share their second pair of wings. Happy days are ahead for this eternal family. May your journey into eternity be one of great joy.
