Merrilee Preece Obituary

Merrilee Tanner
Preece
Sept. 10, 1943 - Jan. 18, 2016
Merrilee Tanner Preece, "Mem" to her family and friends, passed from this life on Monday, January 18, while a life-long friend who was doing the "night shift" held her hand. She passed from this life just as she had lived, full of grace and poise. She battled progressive dementia for some fourteen years, but managed to remain the consummate wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, hiker, biker, and tennis player almost to the end.
Merrilee was born September 10, 1943, to Dr. Richard Stewart Tanner and Anna Dale Storrs Tanner, and was the second of five children. She grew up on Yale Avenue in Salt Lake City and attended East High School. There, she was an excellent student, a cheerleader, and a Junior Prom Queen. She then majored in nursing at the University of Utah where she continued as a cheerleader, served as president of the Chi Omega Sorority, and completed her bachelor's degree in nursing.
She and Michael met in high school. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on July 31, 1964. Merrilee then provided the financial support for the two of them through Michael's education by working as a coronary care nurse at LDS Hospital. They were parents of six children.
Merrilee had many diverse interests. She was an avid tap dancer and an enthusiastic tennis player. She served as assistant tennis coach for both the boys' and girls' tennis teams at East High School for a few years. She later taught Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) courses at West, Highland, and East High Schools for several years. She served in many church positions including in the Relief Society, Primary, and Young Women's Organizations. She and her husband served as president and "mission mother" of the England London South Mission between 2000 and 2003. She deeply loved her four hundred plus missionaries.
Those of her immediate and extended family will sorely miss her. They include her children and spouses: Paige Preece, Mardi and Matt Townsend, Katie and Adam Jacobsmeyer, Camryn Preece, Dr. Michael and Jennie Preece, and Dr. Stephen and Jenny Preece. Her siblings and their spouses include: Deanne and Dr. Howard Francis, Rick and Jan Tanner, Michael and Sandra Tanner, and Rob and Marival Tanner. She was also deeply involved in the lives of her twenty-one grandchildren and her one great granddaughter.
Merrilee's family is profoundly grateful to many friends and family who served her, especially in many extraordinary ways during the few final years of her illness. There are too many to mention, but special acknowledgment is extended to Mafi Mahe and her daughters Silipa and Tiala who became virtually a part of the Preece family. We're also especially grateful for the caring staff at the Legacy Village Memory Unit. Thank you, thank you to all!
A viewing will be held for all friends and associates on Sunday, January 24, 2016, from 6-8 PM at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South in Salt Lake City, and again on Monday, January 25 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM at the Monument Park Stake Center on the corner of Wasatch Drive and 1300 south. Her funeral will follow at noon on the 25th. Her burial will be at Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery.

This is a beautiful tribute to Merrilee. I am so sorry to hear about her passing. She was my CNA teacher at East and I loved her and her class. She made everyone feel at home in her classroom. She made the atmosphere fun and enjoyable. She was brilliant and I learned a lot from her. In fact, she helped me finalize my decision to go into nursing. My condolences to your family.

Mike,

Even though I haven't been in touch for many years, since we were in the Choir together, please accept my condolences at the loss of your dear companion. The obituary makes it clear that you both had a great relationship with each other, and provided a great example to your entire family, and those around you. Your example has resonated with me ever since I first got to know you. Take care -

I knew Merrilee from our days at East High School from 1958-1960.. I knew and grew up with Mike Preece from our childhood.. Theirs was a marriage that blessed the lives of thousands. Merrilee's ability to touch the lives of her special missionaries will live in their hearts for decades. My love and prayers go out to the Preece and Tanner families. My life has been blessed to know them and be numbered among their many friends. May God bless you Mike and give you peace as you lay your sweetheart to rest.

Our association was brief in Samoa but we remember you both fondly. It is nice to know Merrilee's passing is but a comma in her life, not a period. May the Lord's comfort be with you as you remember the gracious woman she is.

Oh how I have admired Merrilee as long as I have known her.
She was such a joy to be around - so beautiful inside and out.
I recall the fun dinner we had with you in the mission home in England in addition to knowing her through our children, tennis and neighborhood.
I enjoyed reading the obituary - recounting much of what she contributed in this life. So grand to think of her in her best state.

My memories of Mem go back to childhood. She has always been a gleam of sunshine in the world. My last conversation with her was of playing in the gully behind the Tanner house. Although I am not sure at that point she remembered who I was, she certainly remembered, and loved to talk about, our great times in the gully. She amazed me with her physical abilities. Her hiking, biking, tennis playing, she was exceptional. Her bright smile will be missed by many but I am sure she is having a wonderful reunion on the other side. Prayers are with your family. What a dear dear life long friend! I love Merrilee as a sister and must call her a "rela-friend". As I have watched her and shared experiences with her, I have grown from her example of happiness, laughter, cute remarks and determination. She had a heart of gold and knew what she wanted and went after it. We all loved our "Mem" and what she stood for and wanted in life.

I enjoyed her wit. She always had something funny to say, but it usually had double meaning. Our walks, our talks, our tennis matches, our DUP luncheons and lessons, our college adventures, our Chi O meetings and fun, our cheering days in high school, our early trips to the beach and Midway, our lunches, our back yard sleep out parties, our ward shows etc are all great memories of this lovely lady.
Once a friend always a friend!

I have grown to love her dear family and have watched them care tenderly for her. You did your best and she was blessed. May peace and comfort find you as you pass through this journey now of an "angel" in Heaven. May each of our lives be better because of her. May our testimonies and spirit of goodness and joy be enlarged up. Life is good. Eternity is better. Much love and thanks for the special part you have allowed me to play in these final days. It has been a privilege.

Love,
Bonnie

Dear Mike and family,
What a wonderful friend Merrillee was to all who knew her! To know her was to love her. She was certainly one of the most accomplished members of our East High class and will be sorely missed. We send our love to you, Mike, and your family.
Love,
Monetta and Wendell
