Donald McKay Obituary

Donald Shorten McKay Kaysville, Utah Donald Shorten McKay, 91, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, July 24, 2007. He was born July 11, 1916 in Ogden, Utah, to Heber J and Mabel Mary Ann Shorten McKay. After many years of searching, he finally found the love of his life and married Elma Fowers on March 8, 1962, in the Logan LDS Temple. They have lived in the Layton-Kaysville area for the last 35 years. Don grew up in Ogden and Tooele but always considered Tooele "home". He graduated from BYU in music and German and went on to use his talents throughout his life as a member of the Ogden Chorale, the Ogden Drama Club, and in a male quartet called the "Mormonaires." Music was an important part of his life and as a self-taught pianist; he blessed his family with his beautiful voice and gift for the piano. As a faithful member of the LDS church he willingly served in many callings, spending much of his time singing in and directing ward choirs. He and Elma also spent many enjoyable years working on family history. Don was employed at Hill Air Force Base for 33 years where he made many life-long friends. After retiring he worked for the LDS church taking care of the Crestwood Ward Chapel where he and DeWitt Sorensen won many beautification awards for their grounds-keeping. He is survived by his loving wife, Elma; children, Michael D. (Nancy) McKay, Syracuse; Gary F. (Lisa) McKay, Upland, CA; and Christine (Nathan) Stuart, Kaysville; grandchildren, Kellie McDonough, Tyler McKay, Brittney McKay, Savannah McKay, Danielle Cimo, Travis Cimo, Jordan Stuart, Danna Stuart, Ethan Stuart, and Kathryn Stuart; and a sister Janice (Leon) Thompson, Farr West. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph McKay, and George R. McKay; and a sister Elsie Urie. His children wish to pay tribute to their mother for the dedicated and loving care she gave to him in the failing years of his life. Funeral Services will be held Sat,, July 28, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Kaysville Second Ward Chapel, 25 South 200 East, with Bishopric Counselor Neal Hart officiating. Friends and family may gather at Myers Mortuary of Layton, 250 North Fairfield Road, on Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Sat. at the ward chapel from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
