H. Hurd Obituary

Dr. H. Scott Hurd

Roland

Dr. H. Scott Hurd, 58, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, March 27, 2014, surrounded by his family. Scott is survived by his wife of 38 years, Susan; 7 sons; 1 daughter; and his mother, Elizabeth Ann Hurd. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Eugene Hurd.

Scott was known in the professional world as an advocate for animal health and food safety as he used his veterinary degree and PhD education to research and communicate farm to fork issues with the public sector. He was consistently outspoken about correcting misinformation circulating in public regarding the food animal industry. His steady voice will be missed.

His life priorities centered on his faith in God, his family and his profession. He was a passionate teacher, making the most complicated issues easy to understand. His example left a legacy of truth to his colleagues, friends and family.

Visitation will be 1-4 pm Sunday, April 6 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames. A short visitation will start at 9:30 am with A Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am on Monday, April 7, also at St. Cecilia. Burial will follow at 1:30 pm at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, rural Gilbert.

Sue, just read this on line as we are driving home from our youngest daughter's wedding in the Grand Teton National Park. To say we are shocked and saddened is a poor expression of how this makes us feel. Am remembering you both with such pleasant memories and wrapping you and your family in our hearts.

The Canadian Association of Swine Vets invited Scott to a meeting in Saskatoon. Scott was generous and funny and of course, well versed in the topics of food safety. Recalling his sabbatical in Denmark, he spoke about his family, stating that he had prewarned the children, that compared to the United States, food portions are smaller and that, at first "you will be hungry". All adjusted to the absence of "supersize" and felt happy and healthy. He was so proud of his family. My best wishes to you. Sincerely, Madonna Benjamin.

Sue, I am shocked & saddened to hear of Scotts passing. I have remembered you both fondly over the years. You both showed me that I am of value & worthy. It took me awhile to believe it. I have always been sooo very greatful to you both. I am sooo sorry I didn't get to hug & thank you both in person. I am glad I was able to connect w/ Scott recently. I am sooo sorry Sue. I will be thinking of you all. Keeping you in prayer. All my Love, Amy Trione
