Shirley Christianson, age 86, a South Hamilton resident for 65 years passed quietly from this life at her home in Jewell on Wednesday, January 23, 2013. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Visitation will be Tuesday evening at Becker Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be given for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Shirley Ruth Warren was born in Webster City on April 1, 1926. She graduated from Webster City High School and then attended Patricia Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri. Shirley was the first Miss Hamilton County. She married Kenneth Carl Christianson a former Hamilton County Attorney and they made their home in Jewell. Shirley loved to work the New York Times crossword puzzle and enjoyed poetry. She also liked to walk and was very interested in nutrition. Shirley had a fantastic memory and was the family historian and story teller. Her family started several radio stations and newspapers in the area, including the Webster City Freeman Journal and Jewell Record-News, from whom she gained a lifelong interest in civic affairs.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Michael Christianson, Esq. of Pasadena, Maryland and Dr. Jonathan Christianson of Chattanooga, Tennessee; her daughter, Melinda Christianson of Folsom, California; four grandchildren, Aaron Christianson, Brandon Christianson, Kelsey Christianson, and Haley Christianson; and a sister, Diane Laustrup of Placerville, California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles V. Warren and Ruth Ella Beryl (Hunter) Warren; her husband, Kenneth Christianson in 1968; sons, Patrick Christianson in 1972, Jeffrey Christianson in 1991, Dr. Timothy Christianson in 2011; a daughter, Karen Christianson at birth; a sister, Geraldine Findley; a brother, Charles Warren, Jr.; and a granddaughter, Katie Christianson in 2009.

The Christianson family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the entire South Hamilton community and, especially to Mrs. Laverne Iverson, Dave and Sue Gordon, and Rich and Marian Olive for the many acts of kindness that Shirley received over the years.
