Frank, Martha, and John - you have my sincere condolences for the loss of your beautiful mother. My parents traveled with your parents as guides to the Holy Lands and elsewhere. They loved the incomparable education your folks provided during the trips, and returned home with lessons they continued to study and apply. We will all feel the loss of their contributions to life.

I met Mrs. Newport while I was secretary to Dr. Newport during my years at SWBTS--1990-1992. A lovely woman.

(When I first submitted my entry, I failed to include my name.)
I am among those who, out of great respect, will be visiting Eddie Belle and John Newport's gravesites regularly. Our families were long intertwined. At different times the Newport family and the Henry family lived in the same house. The Henry family lived there until I was one year old and then moved two houses down the same street. Not many years later the Newports moved to that same house. They enlarged it, and they lived there for many years. Their arrival was one of the high points of my childhood. Two of the three Newport children were the same ages as two of the three Henry children. Our parents became very good friends.
I well remember Eddie Belle Newport's love of travel, her love of learning, her frankness in conversation, her love of church, and her family spirit. Like my mother, she squeezed a lot of living into each day. In our neighborhood there were many formidable adults, and she was one of the most formidable. In those days we were free to wander the neighborhood and the hillside behind our homes as long as we were able to hear our mothers' voices when they called us. Both my mother and Eddie Belle Newport had really strong voices -- voices we could hear from a long distance. To this day, whenever Frank is on TV, I tell my wife by doing my best imitation of Eddie Belle Newport calling his first two names.
With you we rejoice in remembering her long, full, and remarkable life.

Eddie Belle Newport was a large part of my growing up years and I remember her with all of the love and grace she exhibited. Her values were always there in my thoughts and helped to guide me when I needed guidance. She always had such a wonderful smile. Martha, I am there with you in spirit and you have my deepest sympathies. She was an amazing woman. Her spirit will always be there for us.
