Barrett Martin Havran, 31, died at his home on Monday, March 14, 2011. Funeral: 2 p.m. Friday at University Christian Church, with interment following in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Rob Crain, James Greer, Brent Karrington, Chris Lewis, Will Radcliffe, Ashton Randall, Bobby Reyes, Jonathan Souza and Justin Tonick. Memorials: The family suggests that gifts be made to Fort Worth Country Day School, to establish a memorial scholarship in Barrett's name benefiting the track team, or to Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star in memory of Barrett Martin Havran. Barrett was born June 6, 1979, in Fort Worth to Joy Ann and Robert Havran. Barrett attended Fort Worth Country Day from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 1998. He excelled in academics, theater, football and track. He was elected the 1997 Homecoming King. In both football and track, he was selected captain and most valuable athlete. Earning a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin in track and field, he excelled as the ninth-ranked decathlete in school history. In 2001, he ranked 18th in the nation. While at the university, he was the track and field captain, a four-year decathlete letterman and a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He was awarded the Lan Hewlett Award, given to the athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average of any graduating letterman. He was named to the Big XII First All-Academic Team, as well as the UT Athletic Director's Honor Roll each of his four years of college. He also served as UT national coordinator and representative to the national convention of the American Marketing Association. Barrett graduated with a BBA from the McCombs School of Business in May 2002, ranking in the top 15 percent of his UT class. He then attended the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law. While there, he was a member of the National Championship White Collar Crime Mock Trial Team and was named top advocate of the competition in Washington, D.C. During law school, he was SMU's On-Campus Mock Trial Champion, the Locke Liddell & Sapp Negotiation Winner, a member of the SMU National Negotiation Team, and a two-time member of and a regional finalist on the American Trial Lawyers Mock Trial Team. He was a representative to the Student Bar Association, was a member of the school voting council, was named as the SMU Outstanding Advocate, and was elected to the Order of the Barristers, Master Level. After graduating with a Juris Doctor in May 2006, Barrett was admitted to the Texas Bar in 2006. During his academic career at SMU, Barrett worked for Sommerman & Quesada, LLP and coached at both St. Mark's and the Hockaday Schools of Dallas. After graduation, he continued to work for S&Q, becoming very active in the Dallas legal community. He was a member of the Dallas Bar Association and was active in the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers, being elected to its Foundation and Leadership Class and serving as co-chair of the Ask-A-Lawyer Committee. He also taught Mock Trial courses and coached the Mock Trial Team at SMU. He was voted Outstanding Coach of the Year by the SMU Board of Advocates in 2009 and was selected as an associate member of the Higginbotham American Inn of Court. Barrett recently fulfilled his lifelong dreams of returning to Fort Worth to make his home and of becoming active in the city he loved. He was employed in seasoned loan acquisitions at Doss Knight & Associates/Texas Bank and was the principal of Havran Law PC. He served on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Texas, where he was a devoted Big Brother. He was on the United Way Income Council, and a member of University Christian Church, Downtown Fort Worth Rotary Club, Colonial Country Club, the Fort Worth Club, Ridotto Club, Steeplechase and the UT Ex Letterman's Association. At Texas Wesleyan School of Law, he was currently teaching classes in trial advocacy/techniques and working with the Mock Trial team. Barrett enjoyed water skiing and spending time boating with his family and friends on Lake Granbury. Two of Barrett's special avocations were UT football and coaching young athletes. His friends and loved ones will miss his smile, his dancing, his intelligence, his energy, his competitive spirit, his dedication, his kind heart and his love for his family, friends and community. Survivors: Parents, Joy Ann and Bob Havran; brother, Blake Havran and Blake's fiancee, Mary Elizabeth Levy; grandmother, Joy Weaver; grandparents, Ed and Muriel Havran; special girlfriend, Christine Powers; and a host of other family and friends.
