I was at Groton for the Honea years. He was a kind and gentle man who made a positive difference in our lives. He did not stay long but his life lives on in many of us and we offer our thanks for a good man. Joe Cheshire V class of 1966

I was in disbelief when I read the obituary, in the passing of Rev. Honea. He was a major part of my life when he performed the wedding ceremony for my wife, and I. Our prayers and thoughts are with the entire Honea family.

Dear Patricia,

I remember clearly when Bert and you and your family arrived at St.Paul's and took up residence with us in the "Lower". Bert was a great master for us third formers; but I also recall his sermons, which inspired us and kept our attention. His Texas twang and twinkle in his eye were his signatures. Please accept my deepest sympathy and rest assured that you are in my thoghts.

With love,

Dimitri (Sevastopoulo, '60)

With such a grounded, wonderful daughter as Mary McClung, Mr. Honea must have been a wonderful parent as well.

Graddy, you will be missed by all of us. I could never in my life imagine a better grandfather, role model, or person. I know you are being welcomed warmly into heaven, and I'm sure Major, Pic, Tadgie, Mavros, and all the other animals will be delighted to see you at the bridge. I'm going to miss you, Graddy. You were such a special person.

Bert was a great member of my extended family. Thank God for Bert Honea's life! God Bless his family in this time of loss.

I, too, received blessings from Rev. Honea during his brief tenure as Groton's spiritual leader. The eloquence in and the consistency of the remembrances of my classmates speak well to his character and disposition. The times were challenging, the shoes to fill were large, the skepticism of some was noticeable, yet his humor, compassion and dedication to the school's principals were enormously effective.
I recall a personal incident of my ill-managed frustration with loss at an away crew race during my last Spring. Bewley, Motley & Peabody may recall as well. And while I had thought there no observers, news carried quickly (and remarkably accurately in that environment); Rev. Honea met the bus on our return. During the ensuing conversation, his compassion, courage and wisdom, turned what might have been a perfunctory disciplinary action with far-reaching, dendritic effect into an indelible vision of grace, growth and maturation (The Henley Regatta that hung in that balance became a profoundly formative experience for me.)
To the family, my sincere sympathy for your loss and my sincere joy for your memories.

While I knew him only briefly, his advice and knowledge was instrumental in saving my son's life. His life was an example of what the world should be like. May he hyave a very special place in heaven.

As a student at Groton School during the Honea's time there I have many memories of both of them and the kindnesses they displayed to me. Several years ago I paid a vist to them in Ft. Worth and it was nice to renew our association. My best to the family during this time of sadness and rememberences.

Fort Worth will be at a huge loss for the loving kindness of Rev Honea-his humor and leadership @ St. Andrews was always a blessing...
So glad you have gone home to be with the Father.
All the Best!

My deepest sympathies to Mrs Honea and all the family on Mr. Honea's passing.

Mr. Honea was the Headmaster while I attended Groton School. It was a very challenging and difficult time to be in such a position. Our class, in particular, was quite rebellious. Nevertheless Mr. Honea worked very hard to be a responsive, kind and thoughtful leader.

My family and I were very saddened to learn of Rev. Bert Honea's passing this past weekend. I was a junior at Groton School the year Rev. Honea became the school's 3rd Headmaster. He had terribly big shoes to fill following in the footsteps of John Crocker and The Rector, and there were some who wondered how someone from the south could serve in the role of that New England boys institution.
But I recall his good sense of humor and his dedication to the principles of the school while at the same time understanding his role was not to follow, but to move the school forward. Although his time at Groton was too short, he left a lasting mark on those of us who knew and studied under him.
Three years ago, I was delighted to see him and Mrs Honea at a service at The Episcopal Cathedral in Phoenix honoring the early missionary work of Endicott Peabody. I was touched that they would have made the trip all the way from Ft Worth to attend, and I so much enjoyed catching up with the both of them. I wanted to tell them both how much they meant to me and so many other Groton students and hoped they were proud of their time there. A letter I wrote to them afterwards was returned for insufficient address, and I am so sorry now that I did not try harder to reach them. In a very small way, this note, I hope, will carry that message to Mrs Honea and his family.
My thoughts and prayers go out to Mrs Honea and all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a fine man, a devoted priest and teacher and he touched so many, many people in his busy and accomplished life. I know he will be warmly welcomed into The Kingdom of Heaven.

I greatly admired Rev. Honea for his kindness, thoughtfulness and personal courage during his first year as Headmaster of Groton School in 1966-67. I am grateful to have had the chance to know and learn from him.

I was a student at Groton School when Rev. Honea was headmaster. I was in his second graduating class. Both he and his sweet wife had a profound impact on me. I greatly enjoyed visits for socials at their house. I remember many talks, sermons and lessons and have fond memories of his leadership and faith in me. Both of us were southerners in a northern world. His devotion to his students, his humanity and gentle spirit helped mold me into a person who has spent his career working for indigent people in my law practice in North Carolina. I am sorry for your loss, but know his life touched many people in a quiet and dignified way and made the world a better place. Best wishes. Joe Cheshire

Patricia and family, I am so saddened at Bert's passing. I had the pleasure and privilege of serving with Bert many times at the altar as a lay minister. No priest ever made me feel so at ease or special as Bert did. I shall miss him deeply. Ah, but what a warm place he has left in my heart. Peace to all of you.

Bert was a gracious and kind man. He and Pat were so welcoming to me when I came to Fort Worth, and he often showed me his support and enthusiasm for women in the ordained ministry. His hand-typed notes were a treasure. His death was a shock. He will be missed
