John Henry Wendell Jr.

1935 - 2009

John Wendell Obituary

John Henry Wendell Jr., 73, formerly of Fort Worth, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, transitioned peacefully Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, surrounded in love by his family.
Service: 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Robertson Mueller Harper. Following committal services, John will be laid to rest in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: Mr. Wendell will lie in state on Monday in the Parlor at Robertson Mueller Harper; family and friends will be received in the Great Room from 2 to 4 p.m.
Memorials: Consideration of gifts, in John's memory, is suggested to Gilda's Club North Texas, 2710 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas, Texas, 75219.
John was born Dec. 24, 1935, in Shreveport, La., to John H. Wendell Sr. and Adeline Morell Wendell. He graduated from Neville High School in Monroe, La., before attending Louisiana Tech University, where he earned a bachelor of science in petroleum engineering in 1959.
He joined the United States Air Force in 1959 where he flew an array of jet aircraft, principally the F-100 Super Sabre and the F-105 Thunderchief. He flew 67 combat missions in an F-105D fighter bomber against targets in North Vietnam and other areas where hostile communist forces were operating. On the 67th combat mission, he led a complex strike force against a series of heavily defended targets north of Hanoi. A piece of shrapnel from a Soviet built SAM caused his aircraft to be enveloped in flames. His immediate capture was the prologue to a saga of 2,370 days of captivity by the North Vietnamese, where he survived stark conditions and unbridled cruelty. Ever the optimist, he viewed this period of his life as his single greatest learning experience, finding comfort in caring for his fellow prisoners of war.
After his return on March 4, 1973, John brought his engineering acumen and flying experience to bear on 20 major weapon design projects, including serving as project manager of the conventional cruise missile and the No. 2 man on the AMRAAM. For his exemplary service to his country, he received 19 major awards and decorations, most notably 2 Silver Stars, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, 2 Bronze Stars, 6 Air Medals, and 2 Purple Hearts. He retired from the Air Force in 1979 at the rank of lieutenant colonel.
He graduated with a master of business administration in finance and behavioral science from Southern Methodist University in 1975, where he met his wife, Bebe, and they married the same year. His work as a registered professional engineer involved acquisitions, finance, operations and evaluations of both conventional and unconventional oil and gas projects over the course of three decades. In recent years, as an entrepreneur, he was focused on improving the environment by transforming the negative externalities of natural gas production into a new source of purified water.
Survivors: In addition to his wife of 34 years, Margaret Ann "Bebe" Ware Wendell, John is survived by their children, Ware Victor Wendell and his wife, Robyn, Margaret Kathryn Wendell, Elizabeth Kathleen Wendell and Morton Edward Wendell and his husband, Jonathan Hubble; John's children, Kathryn Elise Wendell, Angela Christine Hayes and her husband, Donnie, and John H. Wendell and his wife, Nancy; brother, Jay Morell Wendell and his wife, Jean; and many loving nephews, nieces and grandchildren.

When I was in the fifth grade at Northwest Academy I was wearing a POW/MIA Bracelet. A very sweet girl sitting behind me tapped my shoulder and asked "Who is on your bracelet?" I showed her with my wrist offered fully and wrist flexed to show the man I prayed for and I said, "Maj. John H. Wendell, Jr." "That is my father", she said. It was my classmate Angela. His daughter. I have thought about him constantly since then. I always wondered about Angela. Major Wendell came and spoke to our assembly. Chocolate. He missed chocolate. We were so young. I loved my father and never could understand what and how much she missed her's. He was released that year. Thank you for your service and love to your family.

I attendend grammar school (Georgia Tucker) and high school (Neville) with Johnny and just heard about his death. We recently had our Neville High School 55th Class Reunion the weekend of Oct. 16. We all wondered why we did not hear from Johnny and many people asked about him. He was a wonderful person and we were all devastated when he was taken prisoner in Viet Nam and ecstatic when he was released and able to attend our 20th reunion in 1974. I am so sorry we were unaware of his illness and his death. I will e-mail a copy of his obit to our class members.

Dearest Bebe,Ware, Margaret, Elizabeth and Morton~ It has taken me a day or so to decide what to write in a limited space. Richard and I send our sympathy, of course, but as we read the obituary over and over we both were so humbled by John's service to his family and to his country. Too late we get too smart, and now we realize how much more we'd like to have visited with him. What a strong and smart man he was, and we hope you will treasure every minute you had with him. Our love to all of you and our thoughts are with you and your family.

To the Wendell Family,

As one of the lieutenants that John took under his wing and supported and mentored at Bitburg, I will always be grateful. His encouragement never wavered through our days in Takhli or while we were in Hanoi. A true patriot and hero. John, GN and GBU.

What a funny, curmudgeony, stubborn, brave, smart, endearing man - not enough adjectives for John! I have been priviledged to have been "a part of this family" and to have received the gift of knowing him and seeing his love and care of his family and theirs of him. I am more than sure that his spirit soared and that he is "flying with the angels" (an interesting vision)!!!!!
God's blessing to you, Bebe, Ware, Margaret, Elizabeth, and Morton, and so very much love.

John was the epitome of a gentleman--and certainly a gentle man! Bebe, Jim just emailed me this sad news and this was the quickest way I new to let you know how sorry I am for you and the children. Love always, Gay

John was such a sweet and caring man and it was an honor to have known him. I'll always have a wonderful memory of watching John and his cat during a "Blessing of the Animals" service at First Methodist. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Bebe and your loving family.

Growing up John and his family became my second family soon after his son, Ware, and I made friends in Elementary school. Ware would always go back and forth with me trying to decide whose dad could beat up the others the best, silly boys often do this. In truth, both of our dads had big hearts and that is what I will remember most about John. Even at 73 it seems good men die far too young. I am saddened that my friends have lost their father, as I have lost a friend, and I pray that God strengthens them through this time. I know that the man John was will carry on through his children and their children. Maybe in Heaven we can finally see whose Dad would win:) I love you guys.

In 1959, John married his high school sweetheart and fellow Louisiana Tech graduate, Janis Futrell. Together with their 3 children, Kathryn, Angela and John, Janis worked tirelessly during John's 7 years in Viet Nam with the POW/MIA League of Families for his return and the better treatment of prisoners. John's life was broad and affected many families. Our condolences to his entire family.
