Phil was my boss (hired me at the S-T in '68 when he was City Editor of the Evening paper), my friend and my mentor/hero. Texas has lost one of the journalism greats. Among a lot of other things, he taught me two of the most important principles in journalism: Treat everybody like a human being (even if they're scum and yes, that's contradictory, so sue me), and above all, always, always, always be fair. I don't see anybody out there who can take his place. A pity.

I knew Mr. Record from St. Andrews Catholic Church and Boy Scouts. He was always a kind and gentle man. A good Christian example. My heart and prayers go out to the family.

What a loss to journalism and humanity! He was one of journalism's stalwarts, but much more. Phil's passing from this life to a new life leaves a gaping hole in our hearts. Our sympathy goes out to Pat Record and her family. and to his countless friends. Phil was a great newspaperman who loved chasing a story. The fun he had in the newsroom, on the tennis court and everywhere else was contagious. His faith in God grew stronger through the years. He deeply cared about all of us, celebrating with us in happy times and counseling us through hard times. He will be greatly missed.
