Drusilla Cochran Sheldon

1924 - 2012

Drusilla Cochran Sheldon, 88, previously of Padre Island and Southlake, lived a full, happy life, and peacefully passed away Friday, July 20, 2012, with her two daughters at her bedside. Service: 3 p.m. Thursday at Meadowbrook Methodist Church, 3900 Meadowbrook Drive, where the family will receive friends beginning at 2 p.m. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. A memorial service celebrating Dru's life was held Tuesday, July 24, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Corpus Christi. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association. The daughter of Dr. Irad McGrady Cochran Sr. and Lula Hendrix Cochran of Fort Worth, Drusilla "Dru" was born in Comanche and grew up in Fort Worth. Jim and Dru married in 1944 in Fort Worth and were married for 50 years. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. They lived in Saunderstown, R.I., Fox Point, Wis., Southlake, and Padre Island, where they loved their waterfront home. For 50 years she and her husband shared their passion for sailing, spending time on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island and vacationing in Saunderstown. She studied history and political science at the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of the ADPi Sorority. She was very proud that her granddaughters are both ADPi sisters. Her passionate interests in genealogy led her to author several books on the history of our family. Dru was active in local politics and ran for Texas state senator as a Republican candidate. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Dru has lived the past three years at Trinity Towers, where she made wonderful friends and was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Rhodes Sheldon III, and sister, Berna Cochran Irving. Survivors: She is survived by her brother, Dr. Irad McGrady Cochran Jr. of Fort Worth; two daughters, Drusie Sheldon of Saunderstown, R.I., and Susan Sheldon Crysler and husband, John, of Camden, Maine; four grandchildren, Nathan Leith Gifford, Bradley Rhodes Gifford, Amanda Roberts Crysler and Amelia Chase Crysler Sanchez and husband, Robert; and 14 nieces and nephews.
