Joe Dugger Obituary

Joe K. Dugger, 79, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013. Funeral: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel. Memorials: TCU Athletics or American Cancer Society. Honorary pallbearers: Mike Renfro, Larry Harris, Hunter Enis, Jim Shofner, Jim McCord, Jack Crowley, Joe Cates, Bill Estell, Jim Swink, Dennis Claridge, Dewain Dugger, Clint Renfro, Ford Renfro, Paul Chandler and Possum Elenburg. Joe was born and raised in Collin County to Lionel and Opal Dugger. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1952. He contracted polio in his senior year, but it never slowed him down. He overcame his disability to excel in many business endeavors -- oil and gas, restaurants, hotels and real estate development. Joe graduated with a BBA from TCU and continued to be a lifelong supporter of the Frogs. After college, he worked for the Harvison-Fisher Co., owned Colonial Oaks Restaurant in east Fort Worth, managed Clayton House hotels and was a successful real estate developer, which included the River Plaza office building. His later life included legendary gourmet meals prepared for his friends. Joe's generosity (he financially supported numerous students through college), sense of humor, cooking and love of sports made everyone want to be in his company. Survivors: Son, Tony Stone; brother, James Dugger and wife, Jewel, and their family; and several nieces and nephews.

One of my favorite memories of Joe was him taking me fishing up near Denton when I was a young boy. He was driving a station wagon, backed it up almost to the shore line, he hobbled over on his crutches and we fished off the lowered wagon gate. 2 treble hooks on leaders, no sinker, and nothing but a slice of white bread cast out 30 feet or so. The cats would literally race across the surface dorsal fins exposed and the winner got a mouthful of bread and hooks! I'll never forget that day, and I'll never forget Joe either. Brad Reid

What an empty feeling to learn of the passing of an old friend and mentor. I will remember old fishing trips with you and Dick O'neal forever.

Heaven rejoices in the arrival of this magnificent soul. "Well done, good and faithful servant" is echoing through the halls. He will be missed by all those his life touched. We will carry you in our hearts til we meet again.

Joe D you were one of a kind. A man of style and charisma. You introduced me to the real estate development business and deal making, for which I will always be grateful. Rest in peace.

No one who met Joe could ever forget him. His determination, straightforwardness, generosity, sense of humor and joy of life made that impossible. My admiration and love for Joe had and have no limits.

The great holidays and family time. He had a passion for cooking. The jokes and story telling that made those around him laugh.
