The Bob Crewe I Never Knew
I didn't know Bob Crewe very well; I only met him a couple of times at social gatherings. What I learned about him I learned mostly from my long and rewarding personal and professional relationships with his two daughters, Jan and Marsha. Each are beautiful, charming, gregarious, warm, witty, bright, dedicated, hard working, creative and exceptionally successful in their chosen fields. And as we all know, acorns don't fall far from their trees.
I know Bob married well. Patt is a wonderful woman who, for 65 years as partners with Bob, shared a long and loving life, which is best reflected in the three great children they nurtured and raised, and their three grand children who they've showered with love and affection. Patt also writes one hell of an obituary.
I know one of Bob's passions was baseball, at which he excelled, and had it not been for world events out of his control, he would have almost certainly made a career of it. Another of his passions was golf, and he spent much of his later years involved with his favorite hobby.
I know Bob enlisted in the Navy when World War II intervened and served his country with honor and dignity, making lifelong friendships that have endured throughout the many years since.
I know that after the war, Bob enrolled at Michigan State University, where he earned his degree, developed more long-lasting relationships and friendships and remained a true-blue (or should I say green) Spartan throughout his life, which isn't easy to do when you live in the middle of BuckeyeLand.
I know that after college Bob got a job at the Coca Cola Co., where through hard work, loyalty and dedication he rose steadily through the ranks, developing even more lifelong friends and colleagues over the 32 years he was employed there.
I know that Bob loved music, especially the “Big Band” swing sound, which was the soundtrack of the ‘40s. But I believe that Bob's life is most succinctly expressed by the last line of a song by the Beatles, the soundtrack of the ‘60s: “And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.”
I also know that Bob was not a religious man, but I truly believe that his essence, his soul, his spirit will live on among those who knew and loved him and will continue to live on in his many friends and his children and their children for generations to come.
No, I didn't know Bob Crewe well, but I do know he led a full and purposeful life, one filled with success, love and happiness, which is as much as any person can wish for in this world. So, at ease Bob: mission accomplished!

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. While I know you will all miss him, a new ship has arrived to take him on his next journey.
