Richard Thompson Obituary

Thompson Richard J. "Rick" Thompson, age 82, passed away on August 23, 2016 at Kobacker House. He was born on April 1, 1934 in Framingham, MA. and was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps from 1952-1956. Rick held an associate degree in electrical engineering as well as a BA in engineering management from Northeastern University, and a Masters of Business Administration from Xavier University. His professional career included calibration of instruments traceable to the National Bureau of Standards, programming computers to calculate the accuracy of radar systems used by the Federal Aviation Administration, programming support to identify and calculate the orbits of satellites for the 9th Aerospace Squadron, United States Air Force in Colorado Springs as well as testing and evaluation of computer hardware for the USAF. From 1968-1983, Rick was a department manager at Chemical Abstract Service in Columbus, Ohio where he was involved in computer system measurement and configuration, data base management and systems documentation. Rick also owned and operated several retail businesses and real estate investments. Rick loved vacationing in Aruba, playing blackjack, smooth jazz and big band music, chess, his cats, especially his Burmese, Koko and the humor in Maxine cartoons. Rick was preceded in death by his parents Ernest J. and Bernice M. Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lynn (Travis) Thompson; daughter, Christine E. Thompson, Loveland, Colorado; son, Robert J. Thompson, Phoenix, Arizona; and grandchildren, Travis Nash Cloud and Jenna Lyn Stinnett. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Madlon Travis Laster and brother-in-law, James H. Laster, Winchester, VA; brother-in-law, Alan Travis and sister-in-law, Fiona Travis, Dublin, Ohio; and nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 28, from 2-4 p.m. at the RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High Street, Worthington, Ohio, where a memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Kobacker House or a charity of your choice.

Lynn, I am so glad that I was able to attend Rick's Memorial Service and a big THANK YOU for you kind words.

Rick was an important person in my "work life" and I enjoyed working for and with him for the several years that I was in his department at Chemical Abstracts Service.

And also, thanks for remembering my name; that really blew me away; esp. as I was not sure I would remember you' you put that to rest by so quickly coming to me as I was sort of scanning the room

May you be blessed with many happy memories.
